Fired from one school due to poor performance, more successful at the next.

This is a great question. Pretty tough once you strip out the guys fired for something other than performance (e.g. Pitino, Sampson). For active coaches, Shaka? Rick Barnes? Cupboard feels pretty bare.

I would have guessed there were more good reclamation projects (entirely possibly I’m not thinking of some).

Possibly Richard Pitino. He was fired from Minnesota for underperforming, resurrected New Mexico, and landed a job at a high major at Xavier. It’s a stretch, but the best one I could think of.

Going back a few years, but what about Tom Davis at Iowa? Did he get fired from Stanford? He kind of sucked there, then had a great run at Iowa, then was inexplicably fired.

Good coaches are usually good from the start, but here's one name that struggled until he arrived at the right time: Jim Valvano.

One season at Johns Hopkins: 10-9
Three seasons at Bucknell: 33-42
First three seasons at Iona: 43-35

he might as well have been He was forced out at IU
Sampson and Indiana worked out a deal allowing him to resign because he was going to get fired for major NCAA rules violations and lying to the NCAA.

He wasn't fired and his resignation wasn't for poor performance.

I know what happened. It was “Poor performance” with respect to the rules. Houston certainly gave him a second chance. If you disagree with my interpretation I really don’t care it’s supposed to be a fun thread and you’re a buzzkill.
