No. I don't believe Nneka ever seriously considered UConn.

Yeah but maybe it was because Elena committed first. Actually, didn't Elena commit verbally VERY early? I think I remember hearing Sophmore year or something like that.

I don't mean to turn this into another anti-EDD thread. Once she figured out what she wanted, she did what was right for her and probably everyone else involved as well. What is unfortunate is that it HAD to impact UConn's recruiting. I am nearly certain that we lost out on someone because she announced for UConn. The question is who. It is what it is but people should keep in mind that something like this does indeed have a negative impact on the program. If the Ogumikes were on UConn this year, and last year, we might have been looking at a three-peat. That assumes the team would have been good enough to beat Ms. Game Changer at Baylor.

EDD committed the summer before her senior year (August 2007). Nneka committed in November of 2007. UConn never made any of Nneka's lists that I saw, including before EDD committed. Nneka chose Stanford over Duke, Baylor and Texas as I recall.

Nneka was never going anywhere but an elite academic institution.

Nneka told Tara she was always coming to Stanford, and Tara joked that she wished Nnkea would have told her.

But she had Texas on her list. :D
She didn't really, though, in all seriousness. Baylor and even UT were not really ever in the running.

There was definitely an opportunity cost to UConn with respect to EDD's committment and subequent change of heart, but that cost was not Nneka Ogwumike.

Alex, right as always....and that cost was a one person recruiting class the following year. Not only did we lose EDD, but Jess McCormack went home after sitting out her red shirt transfer from UDub. Jess may have been a force, had she stayed. She was (is?) on the NZ national team at the time she came to UConn.

Not too surprising that the following recruiting year was a small (but mighty-love KELLY) class. Think about it - the 2012 seniors would have been Jess, EDD, Caroline, Tiffany and Heather. Crazy, right? Nope, Nneka was never walking in our door. It was always Stanford for her.

Not sure who else Geno was after for the 2013 class besides Kelly (some of you will remind me, I hope).

My recommendation is to just let this one go unless you really are looking to fabricate a reason to dislike EDD. Some things are just completely unknowable and, in this case, not even worth the speculation or presumed insight that we boneyarders like to feel we have. Let it rest - - EDD is happy, we won a couple championships, and a bunch of people with really unfortunate disabilities get hugs from a famous athlete who doesn't even care that the people she is hugging do not know how successful she is using her basketball skills.

If I recall correctly, I believe UCONN had interest in Taber Spani

Skylar Diggins and Kelsey Bone were the initial big targets, but UConn never got any traction with either one. UConn recruited Taber Spani for a long time, but she chose Tennessee and by the time she did I believe there had been mutual recognition that UConn probably wasn't what she was looking for. UConn then jumped in really late on both Jasmine Hassell and Krista Gross, but they chose Georgia and North Carolina respectively. There are probably a couple of other players that UConn showed interest in from that class, but those are the significant names.

That class was a tough one for UConn to recruit irrespective of anything else going on. There were very few good players from the Northeast in that class, and while UConn can recruit nationally the odds of actually getting that player go up significantly if UConn also has geography in their favor. And most of the players in that class that fit UConn's style of play just weren't interested in UConn for different individual reasons.

Not sure who else Geno was after for the 2013 class besides Kelly (some of you will remind me, I hope).

Nneka wants to be a Doctor... so from what i read is that she has always wanted an ivy league type education, so Stanford was almost a lock from the get go...

The younger sister was recruited somewhat by GA. No chance. I remember her Mom saying we are not necessarily looking for the bright lights but a Qual education. I'm parsing here but that in essence was what it was. Almost imposs to get a real smart 1200 SAT type to bypass a Stanford offer . We did go after Spani and I often wonder WHY?? She has had an injury plagued 3 years but even when healthy she showed little.

Well when you look at the top 100 undergraduate schools rankings... Texas isn't too bad, but Stanford is top four...
Texas is very good. I was joking with Alex, our token Longhorn.

Go Rice Owls Baseball! :)

Stanford is one of the most elite (in a very good way) academic institutions in the world. Attending a school like Stanford on a free ride is an incredible opportunity of life-changing proportions for anyone who has the intellectual capability and interests to benefit from that unique environment. I would be baffled by anyone turning that situation down, as I continue to be by Heather turning down the chance for a Stanford education.

Vols had 5 of top 20 and failed to ever play in the FF. Leave Parker out of the equation and they have not won anything since before 2000.

Interesting. Parker had help from Anosike, Hornbuckle, and Bobbitt in key games, but she was obviously the reason that they won 2 titles. Without her, they would be 0-14 years.
