Our defensive system has a weakness that is susceptible to the styles of offense that Villanova plays and that Creighton played last year (the game against Creighton this year they didn't play that way but made it tough on our offense but mostly we just shot like doodoo).

We anchor our defense with rim protection. Villanova spreads you out about as far as you can go. so there is no weakside help. Then they attack the rim and shoot from 3. We also hedge PnR, which sometimes turns into a switch. Nova is also very good at hunting mismatches off switches.

Today we tried some zone and tried to pressure their ball-handlers full-court. Unfortunately we're not any good at zone and their guards are experienced and strong. We weren't able to force enough turnovers and they got a few too many easy looks.

They also shot >50% from 3, which always helps.

We are not good defending 1v1 on the perimeter. That exposes the interior. You want to get to the rim against us, then drive the ball at Jackson. For all his activity, he is still out of position on most possession and has real trouble staying in front of his man.

Nova played very smartly against Sanogo and Whaley, the used a mini-hook shot very effectively.

We're not particularly good defending 1v1 on the interior either. For as good as Whaley is and Sanogo with his blocks, they both get killed inside when posted up

Generally speaking I always hoped our defense would have more complexity in terms of game planning.

As an opposing coach you only have to game plan for the hard hedge and our shot blockers. So in the middle of a season when you only have 2 or 3 days to prepare it’s a little easier.

Compare that to preparing for a 2-3 or 1-3-1 zone. Plus our aggressive man to man. Puts more pressure on the opposing staff to game plan.

We are just too easy of a scout both offensively and defensively that we either need to shoot lights out and execute perfectly. Or hope the other team has a bad night.

Or play teams in the 250-320 range. Imagine if Sanogo was out then Cole went out with 7 minutes to go up 14? Who thinks we don’t collapse? And honestly, this isn’t a great Villanova team. But it is well coached, tough and resourceful.

Now that Smart has his team at full strength and firing on all cylinders, fasten your seatbelts for that one. Three-dimensional chess vs Hungry Hungry Hippo.

We owe them one…thats for sure. I remember being so deflated after being at that game in MSG a few years ago when they blew us out a couple days before Christmas. They beat us by 20 in Hartford the year before that. Today’s game was a blowout even though the final was only 11. Im going on the 22nd, and I really hope we can get that one.

Where or when will it end? That's a question for clergy.
And, HOW it will end will be determined at the conclusion of the next 9 games, plus or minus how many more games, or how many fewer games will be played after those 9 games.

Not a question for the clergy.

We don't really get worked except against these two teams. I don't think the complexity level is a problem, I don't think it's as simple as you suggest. You also can't really prepare for our athleticism and defensive length/speed.

The defensive system has its virtues. It's main strength is limiting 3-point shots. We held Villanova to 11 3-point attempts. On the season, their next lowest attempts was 19. On paper, we should be able to hold our own in the paint against Nova in general and Dixon specifically. He's pretty good, but still a sophomore and we have Sanogo and Whaley. It didn't happen, obviously. He worked our guys 1v1 just like Justin Lewis and Richmond did. Guys play better at home and all 3 of those games were on the road, but teams with this offense profile are going to give us problems if they're able to utilize the spacing and finish in the paint 1v1 against us.

Nova runs the right system to beat us and also has smart players who are well drilled, strong, and can shoot. They have a top 5 coach AND a top 10 roster AND a roster that fits his scheme. Wright's been recruiting 4/5*s for the past 5 years. He's got top 100 guys on his bench (Njoku, Longino, Patterson, also Antoine but that's injury related) just learning and waiting (like Dixon did last year). It's clearly the roster model that Hurley is trying to emulate.

Fair points. Well thought out.

But you don’t think we are an easy scout?

Seriously, what's the deal with that? Whaley's supposed to be the defending BE DPOY. Didn't look like it today and his early foul trouble kinda screwed us.

Outrebounded with only 2 coming from Sanogo. Recipe for disaster. Our three best players also can't have as many turnovers as they did. One saving grace was some confidence from Hawkins shooting late in the game.
