Why go thru the big Signing Day thing (getting signature on the dotted line) if it hardly seems to mean anything when so many kids just ask for (and always get) their release if they don't like something.

IMO, you signed and committed, and that should require you to at least play a year. If not, then Signing Day & Commitments mean nothing.

The ease of getting a release is more of a courtesy than a requirement in theory.

You don't want to lock a kid in who doesn't want to be there

It's all about the hype. It wasn't like this back in the 1980s. But now, with so much media and other attention from fans, the Signing Day is huge. Plus back in the day, kids were always leaving a school for whatever reason and folks didn't really care. Now it is a big deal. We want to know if a player is signing with a rival school or going to a school that has "X" player that is supposed to be the greatest thing ever. Lastly, schools want to release players as quick as possible because you don't want the school getting any negative press. Like somebody stated here. You don't want to lose potential talent because you, as a school/coach/AD, wants to play hard ball and teach a player a lesson. Not going to go over well.

UConn doesn't release MAL = never get a relevant recruit again.

This is how I feel, when there hasn't been a coach firing the school doesn't "have" to release them, but if they didn't they immediately risk kids questioning if they should sign with X school because if they do have a change of heart the school might be a dick about it

I do think MAL is being a dick about it though

Like transfers, why not an NCAA requirement that you must sit a year out if you break your letter of intent?

That is what happens if you don't get a release. That's why Isaac Hamilton had to sit out at UCLA and Devonte Graham had to go to post-grad in high school

Yes they would...or they might lose the offer to someone who will sign.
Not any top 50 recruits. Coaches wouldnt let a recruit in the 100's take a top 50 kids spot. LOI or not

It makes the whole financial aid document vs. not signing NLI pretty stupid since the schools have such little leverage even with the NLI.

It's an opportunity to put a hat on in a Snapchat video.

Level of excitement meter.

Coaches checking out a recruit - mild excitement.
Coaches get in home visit with recruit - lot of buzz.
Recruit takes an official visit - huge excitement.
Recruit verbals - people get high even without outside substance.
Recruit signs LOI - people have .
Recruit asks for transfer - viagra gets a boost.

Why? He hasn't been disrespectful at all. The coaching staff changed a little, which caused him to question/reflect on his decision. Or he saw the product last year and thought, 'this is not what I want'. I mean, yeah, it's late in the game to do that, but not unheard of given the circumstances surrounding the program right now.

Because most recruits that sign play for the school.

This wasn't an issue before the early signing period was created. If the head coach is fired, or moves on, I have no problem with releasing a player. Change of heart? Not so sure there.

We're talking 17-18 year olds who probably made the decision when they were 16. These are teenagers and 2nd thoughts, doubts and hasty decisions come with the territory. Just saying at that age nothing is final.

To me the LOI is like a good faith reservation, with good and honest decisions. (Adult speak).

Now back to the teenager throw in parent(s), graduation, girlfriend, friends, travel, fear, next phase pressures, etc.., if one thing changes (new coach, new recruit, coaching changes, juniors return, etc.) at the place you made the reservation this will turn a hectic and uncertain future into chaos. In the Spring they have time to rethink.

Perhaps the Miller change in MAL's case tilted the scales. To me it doesn't have to be major, just a change that could sow doubt or affect their confidence in their decision they made.

Just saying they are teenagers after all and picking a school ain't the easiest decision they will make, but perhaps it is the first of many important ones they will be making in their lifetime. The LOI brings certainty, security and allows them to focus on other things (like partying, graduating, video games, girls and other teen stuff).

I think that's why many coaches keep in contact with recruits after signing to get their butts on campus.
