The board has had a couple of threads suggesting that Mosqueda-Lewis is the best pure shooter in WCBB. What defines a pure shooter? Percentage of success, points scored, distance from the goal, form, all of the above and more . . . . ?

I remember my father telling me that Ted Williams was the best pure hitter in baseball and I didn't understand what he meant by that either.

Thanks for bringing this up. I happen to think the term is dumb, and it surely originated with one of those deep-thinking sports analysts.

In the summer they are compelled to use high-falutin' terms like "command" and "velocity" and "location" when describing a pitcher who has good control of his fast ball.

The word "differential" has replaced "difference," presumably because it is a little fancier. Teams are now programs, as secretaries have become administrative assistants and garbage men are sanitation engineers

Ted was a great hitter. Kaleena is a deadly shooter. That's pure enough for me.

I think it has to do with the look of pure fear in your opponents eyes when you jack one up... ;)

I describe a pure shooter who execute the shot with consistently perfect form resulting in consistently perfect results.

KML fulfills both these requirements. Some folks have great forms but do not have the binocular perception to accurately judge distances or the ability to provide the correct strength adjustment for specific distances consistently. Others have both those characteristics but do not have quality form to provide consistent results.

When KML squares up the shot flows identically with each shooting stroke. Her shots are rarely off left or right and most often they are consistently within inches in range either hitting all net or the bottom of the back rim and plunging because of the proper backspin. To me that is a pure shot and therefore she is a pure shooter. On that basis she is the best I have seen.

All the more surprising because, IIRC, she really started out her basketball life playing as a "big" and only worked on her outside game as a way to fill out her skill set and take her overall game to the next level.

TO PARAPHARSE WHAT SUPREME COURT JUDGE FAMOUSLY SAID ABOUT PORNOGRARHY, I CAN'T DISCRIBE IT BUT I KNOW IT WHEN I SEE IT. KML DEE MAYA

Well said, pppggg. Even when KML misses, she misses well! You are forced to ask "how did that ball come out?" Her three pointers are like other player's free throws. Haven't seen the likes of this since Maya. Pure shooter indeed.
