What Drives Winning - Geno Auriemma: Part III

A couple of thoughts.

1. The journey is similar this year. Notre Dame had them beat. Texas should have won.
2. You can tell from some of his press conferences that he has thought more about what he said in this video. He has dealt with already having "all this stuff" by talking about how every season is different and the chemistry of the team changes each year. Just because he has had tremendous success, there are team members who have not.
3. His focus on player development is something that he can control. He can use his past success to play the freshmen whenever and however much he wants. He has earned the right to play them as he sees fit. He may get emails from ridiculous fans second-guessing him but nobody within the walls of UCONN should.
4. If the winning is starting to "torture" him like it did Wooden, then maybe it is time to either retire or take on a new challenge-a different team, a men's program, announcing etc. I want this guy to retire happy. Too many great coaches stayed passed their time and it ended badly.

I think the difference between his example of Tiger and the life of a coach or a team athlete is that the process is ever changing - the team or the players being coached are different every year or even every week. That is especially true for a college coach where the life span of the players is always limited to 4 years and each player in the first year is pretty raw.
