Not as individuals, but as a team. Create a plaque for the 2012-2013 men's basketball team. Talk about loyalty, courage, perserverance and playing for the love of the game. Why not turn the negative of APR sanction into a positive?

They have a plaque that they're putting up in the locker room, and it's permanent. I was hoping they would get on the wall of honor, but at the end of the day I'm just glad that the University is honoring them in some way, shape or form

Anyone know what the plaque says? Don't recall it mentioned before (except that there was one).

"After the game, a video tribute to the team’s effort this season was shown and director of athletics Warde Manuel presented Ollie and the team with a plaque “to forever commemorate this season.” The inscription reads: “It is with great Husky Pride that we recognize your tireless dedication, your constant commitment to the University, the fans and the community.”"

Participation Trophies for everyone...I had thought that UConn was beyond that, but I guess the trophy for everyone syndrome has even reached the highest level of college athletics. This team "accomplished" exactly what Syracuse accomplished they year they were banned, and better than Michigan accomplishing the year they were banned. I wonder it they have a plaque in the Carrier Dome to commemorate the Orange's "accomplishment." You know, of going out and playing basketball when you're on the basketball team...And if they did get a plaque, I wonder how many UConn fans would have made fun of them for it...

The locker room plaque is fine. But beyond that, no thanks. This isn't the Girl Scouts.

Will you at least admit that Ollie exceeded your expectations? Or are you going to fall back on your sack-less "I really thought we were a 20-win team until you guys all convinced me that we sucked" routine?

Because I'm sure you envisioned us needing quality minutes from RJ Evans and Phil Nolan, too, right?

Yup, 20 wins exceeded my expectations. And Napier exceeded my expectations too. He is a terrific college point guard. I had him as a solid player but he played well beyond that. Not sure he is an NBA point guard, but as a college player he is right there. But what has that got to do with giving this team a participation trophy? Teams exceed expectation all the time. And teams don't live up to expectations all the time (Hi Syracuse!).

If I am being honest with myself, this sounds like celebrating a moral victory for a program that is better than that.

The video tribute was a nice way to celebrate the effort, but I am ready to move on.

Agreed. And as many have pointed out, if he returns he has a chance at a fairly legendary college career.

As for the rest of the team, I'd say they all pretty much met my expectations, except Boat and Tyler. I thought Boat would develop more this season, and I thought he would be a little better than he is. And I think Tyler regressed this season. I didn't expect greatness from him, but I expected progress and didn't see any.

I'm not a huge fan of the participation trophy, but I see this as being very different.

These are the young men who stayed through a very difficult season, when they were given every encouragement by the NCAA. The right to participate in the post season was taken away from them, though they did nothing wrong, by an out of control bureaucracy that had to change the rules to punish them, that used old data for which the institution had already been punished, and refused to look at the current data that would have allowed them to play in the post season.

They stayed knowing that they'd be without their Hall of Fame head coach and instead would work under an untried assistant who wasn't even given a full year contract. They went on the road and were taunted as cheaters, and as poor students, even though they are neither. They did so while their conference was being eaten alive and while there university was slighted and left in an uninspiring group of leftovers, fillers and has beens.

They were undermanned at the post and so started every game at a very significant disadvantage, and yet they found a way to win. They endured injury after injury on their undermanned team and yet they found a way to win. They did so without hanging heads, and without complaining. They did so in manner that energized the fan base of an institution that has had an unimaginable string of bad news and disappointments.

I suppose that life tends to push us all to cynicism as the ideals of youth are bruised by the stark realities of the real world. But sometimes, you get to see something special. You get to see people doing the right thing under challenging circumstances and doing it in a way that make you proud of their accomplishments. For me at least, this season was one of those times. I hope that I never get so jaded that I can't recognize effort and character when it is so starkly displayed.

...and that's why they were honored after the game for their efforts this season and why they will have a plaque that will forever hang in the lockerroom. Going up on the ring of honor is way overboard.

I'm fine with the plaque, Ace, but I'd be okay with the putting them up on the wall if that wasn't done.

Have to agree with just the locker room plaque. The players, coaches, and teams on the Wall of Honor were part of results that brought long term national recognition to the University and themselves.
