I watched the first quarter and moved on.. it was nice to see Paige hit that 4 ball right out of the gate. Other than that, a typical all-star game, which means boring. All- star games by their nature are problematic The league wants to showcase their stars, without anyone getting hurt, and make a few bucks in the process. The players have both ego and financial reasons to wanting to be selected as all-star but also don't want to get hurt in a meaningless game. The various sports tried to find a way to have an entertaining game without injuries mostly without success. The NFL had their Pro-Bowl which was disliked by fans and players alike. Football involves hitting and getting hit and once player salaries reached a certain point the money to play in the Pro-Bowl Bowl was chump change. The league would hold the game in Hawaii to entice player interest. In 1970 that was meaningful, not in 1990. Finally last year the NFL surrendered to reality and replaced the game with a skills contest and flag football game. Who wouldn't want to watch the best pros play flag football? I did. MLB had an easier time sustaining interest in their All-star game as their wasn't much of an injury issue and the games resembled a normal game. For a while the leagues awarded the winning league home field advantage in the World Series to make the game meaningful; thankfully that was discontinued. As is the All-star game is ok to watch although I'm not a fan of pulling the starting pitchers after an inning NBA All-star games used to be entertaining but are now unwatchable. Players didn't want to get hurt but back in the day the the first 3 quarters looked like a real game without hard fouls and the 4th quarter was for real. That evolved into a game that involved no defense. Uncontested dunks, layups and 3 point shots by the best players in the world is full. In 2024 the winning team has more than 200 points. And so starting this year the game was scrapped and replaced by a four team round robin affair. Not heat but not terrible. I'm surprised Paige was surprised that the WNBA game didn't resemble real basketball. Or that she would think Geno would be shocked as the lack of defense. The game was typical All-star fare and will hopefully be replaced by something more entertaining in the future. Flag football? A spelling bee?
