Weighing in on the 4 pointer
So, Ms. Clark got her wish, and the 4-point shot was added to the WNBA All Star game played last night. Let me say, first of all, the ladies were obviously having a great time during this highly entertaining game! There were a number of truly hilarious vignettes, such as when Kelsey Plum just latched on Aja Wilson and wouldn't let her go until she had held her on the run up half the court while Wilson was screaming "foul, foul, foul" while the two of them were beside themselves laughing. Another time a player was bringing the ball up the court while her defender had her back turned to her, so she chose to pass herself the ball off the defender's back! And, in the most honest response to a question all night, Paige was asked what Geno would think of this contest truly devoid of even the slightest semblance of defense, she said basically that he would hate every minute of it! But, with all due respect to the Sage of Storrs, everyone in the game and attending the game were obviously loving every minute of it! As to the inclusion of the 4-pointer, well Ms. Clark was just about the only participant who didn't throw up the 28-footer and that was only because she was nursing an injury which kept her out of the game. Everyone else couldn't wait to put a toe into one of the 4-point circles to try her luck. Paige was the first to hit one and that opened up a deluge of great long arcs, the results of which truly determined the game in favor of Pheesa's team, including enough from her personally that she broke the all-time All Star game scoring record. They at times seemed to be lining up to get to the aforementioned circle to get their personal turn. Of course, if the 4-pointer was ever made part of an actual game, it wouldn't be quite so bizarre, but in the final minutes of a game, I could see something almost as detached from what we have come to know as the game we love as the trailing team would certainly seek 4 points on every trip down the court to catch up. One could say that the 3-pointer was also a break with tradition but at least the shots from "beyond the arc" could be launched from anywhere, not just from one of two quite small circles to qualify. To me it would be bedlam at the close of every game that a team wasn't behind by 2 points or less. Just my opinion. Yours?
