Week of 1/3 Non-UConn Games

Even without the story, this is a very good job by both schools scheduling a game of this quality in such short time.

Say what you want about Rick Pitino, but he's doing an incredible job at Iona. They're 11-2, ranked #96 on KenPom and he's challenging the roster with a very good OOC schedule.

Their Alabama win was huge and wins over Liberty, Hofstra, Delaware, Yale Harvard and App State aren't total cupcakes either: all teams rank between 117-188 in KenPom. They played Belmont close and a 13 point loss to Kansas ain't bad for a MAAC team. Now they get to play a top-80 team in the surprisingly good Billikens.

Lots o' upsets yesterday:
  • Miami over #2 Duke.
    • Miami now winners of nine straight and are this year's ultimate "all offense no defense" team.
  • #25 Texas Tech over #6 Duke.
    • UTEP transfer Bryson Williams w/ 22 pts on 9-13 shooting.
  • Oklahoma over #11 Iowa State
    • Iowa State played solidly against Baylor, but now two straight clunkers after narrowly escaping Texas Tech and Oklahoma's domination over the Cyclones
  • Oklahoma State over #14 Texas
    • Continued to be impressed of how Mike Boynton's teams play in spite of their postseason ban. After tons of type, Texas has just been "pretty good". Hard to build a championship team with so many transfers (Tre Mitchell didn't play).
  • Missouri over #15 Alabama
    • Alabama is one of the biggest enigmas to me. Kobe Brown w/ 30p (9-13 shooting), 13r and 4a.
  • San Diego State over #20 Colorado State
    • The Rams finally lose, but played their toughest opponent so far. San Diego State demonstrated why they are the 4th most efficient defense in the nation (held Colorado State to 27.9% shooting) while Cal grad transfer Matt Bradley scored 26 on 10-17 shooting. For mid-major fans, the MWC is really good this year: currently seven of their teams are within the top-100 of KenPom and they only have two true bottom feeders. The quality of basketball is on par with the AAC this year, but the AAC cannot compare its level of rivalry to the MWC's. Good chance the MWC will be the 2nd most watched conference for me.
