Week 7 - Dec 15 to 21

Crooks draws the Courtney Paris comp a lot, but I like Jessica Shepard as a future model. Both dynamite big-bodied paint scorers with midrange skills. Shepard transformed her body between her junior and senior seasons at Notre Dame and is one of the more valuable unheralded players in the W today.
 
Snudda Collins, who somewhat incredibly never shot better than 33% in four seasons as a forward at Ole Miss, is tearing it up as a 14ppg scorer on 46% shooting at Texas Tech this year. Nice story.

Bears will prob still be ranked, but their only decent win was the opener vs Duke. Lost to Iowa, blowed out by Texas, lost to TexTech.
2nd best win: UNLV
 
22 minutes to tip here in Desert Financial Arena. Hopefully the Devils can take inspiration from the Red Raiders as they take on the favored Buffs.

Both McKinna and Makayla are in shoot around so it appears they'll be available to play tonight, which will be very helpful.

Halftime will be fun with the teddy bear toss.... looks like a larger than normal crowd.

Edit. McKinna comes in at the 5 minute mark of the 1st quarter

To be fair it almost worked for Kansas today. Biggest problem IMO is late in the game they didn’t send a double when everyone knew they were moving the ball around to get it to Crooks inside.

Shepard is far more dynamic than Crooks IMO. I love Audi but don’t see any viable future for her in the pros. She’s too slow defensively to matchup with quality 4s and 5s and doesn’t crash the glass (likely by design) to save energy getting up and down the court. I think Courtney Paris is a generous comp, though Audi has better touch around the basket and is remarkably efficient inside. Paris had much longer arms, could blocks shots and was voracious on the glass.

I’ll throw out Monika Czinano as a comp if Audi were to slim down a bit. Czinano was more finesse but similarly had great hands and was automatic around the basket and had a midrange jumper. Neither is a great defender or rebounder but both can just dominate since they’re so skilled around the basket. Also two of the nicest players you’ll find in the sport.

Totally agree with this take. Shep was a more complete player (even though Crooks was and is more dominant at what she does well) even as a junior at Nebraska, and her evolution and fitness transformation are highly uncommon, so I wouldn't assume in any way that Crooks could recreate that - I'm honestly struggling to think of a women's pro player who has undergone a similar fitness rebirth as a pro.

But look, my take is enjoy Crooks dominating while we can rather than worry too much about her future - as you say, she's about as likeable as they come and her circus shots around the rim are just really fun to watch (even if she occasionally gets some absurdly favorable whistles).
 
Stanford with a 5 pt lead over Oregon just under 5 min left in the Bay Area Classic. USC vs Cal is coming up next.

Well, the Jacks looked WAY better than they did against Duke the other night. They looked awful the first five minutes -- 5 turnovers and down 12-0. After that they played the #2 team in the NCAA almost even.

I kept thinking, they need to get some support for Brooklyn Meyer, then the announcers said they're down two starters. That's also why their point guard had 10 turnovers. Texas did a great job denying Meyer, whom I absolutely love watching.

Our Stanford team has joked that this season they are "a fourth quarter team" - and today appears to prove that true once again. They outscored Oregon 20-12 in the 4Q to win by 11 after outscoring Washington 25-12 in the 4Q and Cal 26-14. Each game was tight (or we were behind) going into the 4th and each we just dominated.

Honestly, for everything I miss about Tara, her teams had a tendency to turtle down the stretch. Maybe Kate Paye can develop a reputation for injecting ice into her players' veins when it matters most.

Not going to lie - love, love, LOVE that we beat both the Pac-12 turncoats Oregon and Washington.

Whoa whoa whoa. Blame this on the LA schools. And if you asked an Oregon St. fan, every last one of the former Pac schools are turncoats.

Oregon and Washington were the dagger - the conference would have kept together if they hadn't taken 1/2 share of the B1G blood money.

Don't get me wrong, I'd rather have stayed in old Pac-1X and I am completely sympathetic to OSU and WSU. I am confident Stanford lobbied for the ACC to bring them on. But Stanford would have been totally left behind (like OSU and WSU have been) if they'd stayed, so there really wasn't a choice. Oregon and Washington had a choice.

Come on now. Everybody had an eye on an exit strategy at that point. Maybe if the worthless commissioner had been able to come up with some kind of media deal the thing could've been saved, but he was very busy doing absolutely nothing.

It was a crushing blow but the Big 12 was going after the Arizona schools, Colorado and Utah. I do believe that some schools wanted to leave and others had no choice.

And again, what was the commissioner doing to hold the league together? Nothing. Oh wait, he'd been promising for seemingly forever to deliver a deal, that he never did make good on.

Food Lion is great. Is the grocery store for all people. I always say, if Food Lion were a university. It would definitely be a Land Grant


Never been a huge cherry pie fan, but I may have to get some the next time I buy vanilla ice cream.

So you're justifying them blowing up the conference? I'm not sure what we're arguing about here. I agree the Pac had terrible leadership, but it wasn't a done deal until Oregon and Washington made a midnight pact to abandon ship - before that, the conference had held together for nearly a year.

I was really unhappy when the Pac 12 went away, as were all fans I think.

I still say everybody was looking for a way out, Oregon and Washington just happened to make a deal first. And as much umbrage as OSU and WSU fans make about everybody leaving them, either of those schools would've also left in a heartbeat if the Big 12 or anybody else was willing to take them.

If the conference leadership had actually secured a good media rights deal, maybe nobody would've left. There were a bunch of empty promises that dragged on for a significant length of time. How long were the leaders at each school supposed to wait for K--whatever his name was to actually do something? The conference was getting left way behind as other conferences were backing up money trucks. The Pac 12 Network was a steaming mess and there was a great deal of uncertainty about the future. I don't like it, but money is pretty much everything in big time college athletics.

And I also still say the LA schools leaving was the first domino and led to everything else.
 
I recorded the USC/Cal game and am watching now. Lots of technical difficulties in the first two quarters.

Someone mentioned that UConn's win over Louisville looks better after they beat TN. The beatdown they gave Iowa didn't hurt either.

Food Lion is part of the same multi-national grocery conglomerate now as Giant in the DMV region and Stop & Shop, Hannaford's, etc. in the Northeast.

Triad, if you have some room left in your arteries, or are entertaining, look in the cake section for the Chocolate Truffle Bomb. It's chocolate cake with (hard) chocolate frosting, and inside has layers with both chocolate pudding and mousse. I'm not a sweets guy, but I'm heading out to get one for the holiday for the wife, daughter, and father-in-law. (I dunno if FoodLion has them, but Giant does, and I've found one a couple of times in a Hannaford's in Maine.)

Agreed. Not that UCONN needs any help for cementing themselves as a legitimate top team, but Louisville is looking like a really solid win. The margin is also deceiving, it was a 13 point game but it was a blowout, UCONN was up by 20+ most of the game and the game was over 5 minutes into it.
