Hey hey hoop fans! Starting off week 6 a bit quiet, then the weekend brings a sportsball-palooza of games. We have four top 25 matchups this week.

Sunday USC is playing Elon. I feel sorry for Elon. I believe they often play their big name neighbors from the ACC, but going cross country to play in LA, I just don't know what they're thinking.

Metaphysically no less.

Physically, it’s about 12 miles. I know traffic is different than the mountains of NC, but c’mon.
Sadly, I'm not kidding you when I say that could be 90 minutes door to door.

We went to the Arizona game last year. We were early to USC, walked down the street to eat, etc. so as to avoid traffic - BUT - we also went to the Arizona - UCLA and that was literally unreal. We thought the GPS had to be wrong. It wasn't. Something like 6 miles in an hour. Which it was every bit of.

From Galen Center to the Hollywood walk thingy it's more like 6-7 miles. Probably in the 30-45 minute range.

Google maps says typically up to over an hour on a Wednesday or Thursday evening rush hour from Hollywood and Vine to the Galen Center (when B1G games seem to be). Then figure you need to find parking, then walk to the arena. That's another 15 to 20 minutes, at least. Trust me, I spend a good deal of time in LA these days, and seriously considered hitting up the U$C/Domers game until I realized I'd spend more time in transit than at the game. (And then the Domers crushed Trojan dreams on their home floor and I was a little sad I didn't end up going...)

Wednesday is action packed! Iowa/Iowa State always fun to watch. Thursday is where my focus will be. Let's go, UConn!!

Sets up to be a good game. Got your rivalry. Got your sell out crowd. Got your similarly ranked teams. Should be a good one for the national viewers.

Saw this Hawk preview from a Hawk perspective on 247. Even though I'm a Cyclone I thought the review of the teams was quite good.

Wednesday: the fighting Marissa's of Wisconsin (8-2) travel to Big East's Butler (9-2).

That Butler coach has gotta be shooting up the future P4 coaches list. In 2022, the year before he started, they were 1-27. First year 11-19. Last year 15-17 and a WNIT berth. This year a win over Indiana, and they'll have double-digit wins before January. They did get stomped by Vandy and Texas, so we're not talking top 25 or anything, but still a very impressive turnaround.

Led by Belmont transfer Kilwyn McGuff, daughter of OhioSt's coach.

6pm (MST) the kitties host Cal State Bakersfield with the chance to watch Barnes and her squad on ESPN+.

Massey has Cal State at 346 so it looks to be a blow out and Massey has this as a 100% lock for the kitties - maybe this will be an opportunity for Barnes to coach up Paris et al on how to follow the game plan. :)

Tulane is currently leading NDSU at home in another game on EXPN+. Earlier NAU defeated the Green Wave at the St. Pete Showcase on an 84 foot high school court. The Wave seem to perform better on the regulation court.

I lived in west LA for a few years and became painfully familiar with the traffic. I endeavored to stay within my "two-mile bubble" because anything farther than that, I had to REALLY want or need to get there to make it worth the struggle.

My curiosity was piqued so I looked just now, at 5:15pm Pacific time on a Tuesday, and Google Maps says it's a 37-minute drive from the Galen Center to the Hollywood Walk of Fame. "Door to door" is of course a whole other animal because finding a (legal) parking spot can be more exasperating than fighting the traffic. I would hope that a visiting D1 basketball team, even if the middling likes of Elon, would have a bus dropping the team off when they travel.

You know what. I think Iowa will beat Iowa State. That’s my prediction.

They have the home court advantage. They have a decent option for stifling Crooks. And I just think Tennessee was a good wake up call. And Olsen definitely looked good in that game. So no worries about her.

I have to say that there seems to be a noticeable gap between elite eight and sweet sixteen level teams this season. I've enjoyed watching this Iowa/Iowa State game but both teams have pretty noticable deficiencies that will prevent them from winning championships. With that said, my criticism of Iowa State at the beginning of the season was a little too harsh. They must have had a really rusty start to their season and I think the knock in the teeth from the South Carolina game has woken them up. They look much better.
