The selection show begins in about 15 minutes, but I'm extremely late to the realization that the NCAA is holding its inaugural 32-team WBIT (Women's Basketball Invitational Tournament) as part of its gender equity initiative.

As a result, the WNIT has downsized from 64 to 48 teams and is apparently now the third-tier postseason tournament.

Top 4 seeds are Miami, Washington State, Villanova and Penn State. (These were also the first 4 out of the NCAAT.)

Interesting that Mississippi State wasn't even among the first 4 out. They're a #2 seed in Penn State's quarter of the WBIT, and they host Georgia Tech in round 1.

I noticed on their website today that they modified their procedures to say that teams with sub-.500 records could ask for a "waiver" to be considered for WNIT.

Feels a little like scraping the barrel with some of these teams that got in.

Whoa. WNIT is now 3rd tier? It is all good. As long as programs get to continue in the postseason that is all that matters.

Would love to know why they backed out, if they did. That one ACC reporter Northam noted his surprise that they didn't make the tournament over others like Columbia considering who they beat this season.
