The selection show begins in about 15 minutes, but I'm extremely late to the realization that the NCAA is holding its inaugural 32-team WBIT (Women's Basketball Invitational Tournament) as part of its gender equity initiative.

As a result, the WNIT has downsized from 64 to 48 teams and is apparently now the third-tier postseason tournament.

WNIT takes 6 teams with losing records -- Big East (2), Big Ten (2), Big12 (1), A-10 (1)

Butler, Providence, and Marisa's Wisconsin team make it.
And Triad's A&T.

Every BgE team except Xavier & DePaul made the postseason

I noticed on their website today that they modified their procedures to say that teams with sub-.500 records could ask for a "waiver" to be considered for WNIT.

Feels a little like scraping the barrel with some of these teams that got in.

Here's the updated bracket showing JMU in Miami's place.

Whoa. WNIT is now 3rd tier? It is all good. As long as programs get to continue in the postseason that is all that matters.

Haha Miami must have declined the bid -- and voilà James Madison goes from not in the field to a #1 seed!

Would love to know why they backed out, if they did. That one ACC reporter Northam noted his surprise that they didn't make the tournament over others like Columbia considering who they beat this season.

You see this? Throw it out when my Aggies of NCA&T battle with my Spartans of UNCG in the first round of the WNIT on Friday night. Separated by 1.2 miles.... The battle for Greensboro superiority is gonna be a barn burner.
