Way OT: mobile phone, service, contract recs?

Moving back to States; need upgrade from pay-as-I-go 10 year old phone now used only 2x/year when back home (TMobile). Currently use Samsung android with SIM card in Asia which meets relatively basic needs, but understand I won't / may not be able to use it with a US service provider.

I'm unlikely to play games or to watch videos on phone, but do and will use many apps. Thanks in advance for helpful input, pros/cons, suggestions, etc on service provider, phone (Android v Apple), BS to avoid e.g., contracts - still need to sign up for year+, etc.
