Watching an NFL game where it was 3rd down and 22. Against a 3 man rush and prevent defense, the offense passed underneath, pretty obviously content to gain 10 yards and punting position.
Since MLB has gone to the intentional walk by consent, maybe, to avoid unnecessary plays and potential injuries, the coach of the offense signals on 3rd and long that he's willing to accept a "half the distance toward a first down" if the coach on defense agrees. Of course, it won't happen very often, but it might be worth trying during pre-season. Likely it'll never happen, anymore than, despite all the conversation, the end of kick-off returns, which are far the most dangerous part of the game.
