coaching was the weakest part of our team. so we kept the bad ones and let the good ones go. thumbs up uconn!

while our recruiting hasn't been bad like our on field performance, the OL commits are just rolling in.....wonder why?

I've taken the attitude that this is P's $hitshow for the year, let him do with it what he will. It's sink or swim time for him. Hopefully it works out, but so far I'm not happy with any of the coaching changes that have happened this off season. The crazy part is I actually liked GDL's play calling his first year here. I thought he did a good job of getting players open and I think we'd have had success with more talent. Last season we had more talent and his play calling went down the gutter. Now he can focus on the one thing he stinks at most, which is oline, and I'm not optimistic.

Spot on. You guys really need to stop b!tching and moaning because it's not doing any good. The time to b!tch was before these decisions were made. Now that they're made, just deal with it. Recruits read this board. The only impact you have now by complaining is a negative one. I don't like this anymore than any of you do. But give it a rest already.

I'm not optimistic either. The way our OL and running game regressed last season was simply alarming. I think McCombs is a talented and gutsy kid. But, he is not an every down back and not a homerun hitter.........and he's a 160 ducking pounds. Handing the ball off to him 20-30 times a game makes no sense. Couple that with an OL which no longer attachs in the running game and you get one of the worst overall offenses in the country.

Keep in mind these brain surgeons did this with a kid who shows a lot of promise at QB.

A new Offensive Coordinator could bring about a change in O-line blocking scheme. Just because GDL is the OL coach doesn't mean we will continue with zone blocking. There are a ton of questions that need to be answered but at least we now have hope for improvement.

Anybody who plans on spewing asinine vitriol on this board between now and the start of next season should seriously find another hobby. Just go away and take a break for a while.

Not sure if you are responding to or aluding to my post. If you are, you have three choices:
1) ignore my posts
2) read my posts
3) pound sand

I am very pessimistic with GDL handling the OL and being P's AHC. I have been a loyal and ususally very optimistic fan. These guys have absolutely screwed the pooch on a program that was heading in a very good direction and they did it by completely ducking up our OL and running game.

I hope these guys prove me wrong. I really do. But, if our running game next season is something like 100th in the country we are looking at a 2-3 win season. And I plan on being plenty vocal about these guys if that turns out to be the case.

I'll be at every home game btw.

I agree. I think the linemen we had were not cut out for a zone blocking scheme, which requires a lot of decision making. We had always been a pretty much straight ahead blocking team, which doesn't require a whole lot of coaching. I think the biggest problem has been the change in schemes and not the change in coaches. GDL will now have to coach the scheme of the new OC.

There is no question that line did better as the season went on. McCombs went for 133 and 120 in the wins against UofL and Pitt our the second and third to last games.

But overall, our running game was a big disappointment and mostly because of the line. That being said, McCombs, while a gamer, isn't as talented as Todman or Dixon or Brown.

If someone had really paid attention to the OL during all the plays and didn't focus entirely on who had the ball, it would have been obvious that in actuality the blocking scheme was mostly a mix of zone and man-to-man, sometimes a combination of both during the same down. But to say the OL was the weakest link in this team is wrong. You could question many things, including whether the QB did or did not make blocking adjustments at the line or even had the ability to do so, but that's a discussion. for another post. So just let me just respond in answer to the subject line of this post...IMO the weakest link of our team wasn't the OL or any other part of the team...it was the failure of some on the coaching staff to motivate and use the talented players it already had at it's disposal to advantage on a consistent basis. I also believe that if you were to ask the TEAM, they would tell you it's not about one individual or group of players that win or lose a game, it's about the TEAM.

How much of that mix was a mix-up.
