You know how Easly was glued to the bench, until he came in against Pitt and scored the 67 yd bomb against Pitt. Kinda forced Edsall to incorporate him into the offense and eventually make him the featured receiver.

I think Hyppo got ten carries yesterday which was a vast improvement. If we see those numbers come up some and McCombs gets used in different ways I would be ecstatic. I think McCombs should be allowed to catch the ball in space and be given chance to pick up some YACs. He had two nice gainers yesterday.

In my opinion, no. It was a specific situation where MH has been used in the past (short yardage) and was used again later in the game. I have to admit though, until that run, I thought he was kind of useless. Every time I had ever seen him run he got less than two yards and I think he was averaging less than 1-2 YPC for his career. He looked great on that play though and I actually think that was more a function of the play call and the successful blocking than anything else.

Other than the one big play, did he have any other carry for greater than 4 yards? I don't remember one.

It might have been, if he got the ball again. Maybe our coaches thought it was McCombs that made the run?

Deleone can't see the field and PP looks like a little kid lost at Disney World on the sideline.

He did get the ball again according to the play by play:
- 3rd and 1 at CONN 50Martin Hyppolite rush for 50 yards for a TOUCHDOWN.
- 3rd and 1 at CONN 35Martin Hyppolite rush for 5 yards to the UConn 40 for a 1ST down.
- 2nd and 2 at BUFF 47Martin Hyppolite rush for 4 yards to the Buff 43 for a 1ST down.
- 2nd and 2 at BUFF 35Martin Hyppolite rush for no gain to the Buff 35.
- 3rd and 2 at BUFF 35Martin Hyppolite rush for a loss of 1 yard to the Buff 36.
- 2nd and 9 at BUFF 45Martin Hyppolite rush for 2 yards to the Buff 43.
- 3rd and 7 at BUFF 43Chandler Whitmer pass incomplete to Martin Hyppolite, broken up by Colby Way.

All but the last two were short yardage situations.

The play where got thrown for a 1 yd loss, I think it was Steve Greene that got blown up by the tackle, and allowed way too much penetration. I just want to see these coaches give a fresh pair of legs the chance to break one a long one once in a while. McCombs is a solid back but has not shown anything to suggest he should get every single carry.

I know. I meant that he didn't get the ball looking to do anything but pound it a couple of yards. I would like to see both of our backs get a shot to make a play to the outside. Maybe a couple of reverses or a pitch outside. It is really hard to have an Easley style coming out party running it up the gut repeatedly.

Hyppolite (or any other back up RB) clearly needs to see the field from time to time... but that play calling in the 2nd half (IMO) sucked... overly predictable, which was probably why the blocking broke down... Normally if a defensive sees the play ( like we all have seen from either the bleachers or our flatscreen TVs at home ) BEFORE it happens, 99.9% of the time they're more ready for the play than the offense running it...
With that said, me thinks we probably have enough RB depth, but playcalling plan ole sucks....

I would prefer it be PP's Easley moment. The moment he stops putting in the same guys over and over regardless of production.

How about a play or two for DeLorenzo (who earned it wth production) or Williams (just to see).

Agreed... I'm still surprised about that part... We heard good things about these two but still no real live gam action at RB? Don't get it...

McCombs reads his blocks and finds holes when they're there but just cannot break tackles. How about somebody.....anybody (Hyppolite, DeLorenzo, etc.) simply come in to share some of the running load every game so we don't continuously work our 166lb RB into the ground?

I don't see that. I see a guy that dances too much before hitting the preprescribed hole. I don't see him doing much "finding".

I would hope this isn't the case but yesterday was the first time I remember seeing a toss as opposed to a straight handoff

I agree. McCombs has definately left yards on the field this year, but I don't blame him. He has been over used the last two years. He is also on the way to being tackled before the defenders lay a hand on him and lets not forget the turf monster tackles.

I read PP's statement about MH and he basically said that he is 215 lbs compared with McCombs 165 lbs. Assume that you will see him in short yardage stuff to push the pile. Nice to see him break one and nice to see him work to stay in bounds. He took advantage of his opportunity.

But we don't have an o-line problem?

Tough to block 8 or 9 guys with 5 lineman, one TE and a FB. I thought overall the line did OK, particularly in pass pro in the first half. I don't know all the technicals though on the running lanes so defer to others who know more.

I thought of Easley too. Probably not entirely the case this time...be in the mixut #45 gives them 47 more pounds of muscle and showed good speed ....so he needs to be much more in the mix.

I agree on pass protection... I think two of the sacks on CW were on him for holding ball too long ( 1 he missed progression and 1 no one was open).

If we are going run a back up the gut with dubious, at best, holes, I'd prefer it be the guy who weighs 50 lbs more. Use McCombs outside where he can use his speed and shiftiness. But then again I'm not the winningest coach in Big East history... although I might have been if I coached a team with Donovan McNabb under center.

Unfortunately Hyppolite is about 50 lbs too heavy to run between the tackles and situations where we can run a sweep only arise three or four times a season.

I don't think you can made this assumption. Yesterday on 3rd and inches they pitched him the ball 5 yards deep and he never made it close to the line of scrimmage.

Not sure what games you are watching. McCombs rarely "dances" in the hole. Unfortunately for him and Hipplite yesterday, our interior line has been getting destroyed by opposing defenses.

That to me was the dumbest play call of the game. You put your big back in the game on 3rd and short and run a sweep?

Amen.. When I saw that, I had to think WTF? Seriously, playcalling like that makes you wonder...

But, in hindsight, hopefully we did this in order to not provide too much on film for our final 7 games... That's gotta be the only explanation for that kind of playcalling...
