I'm wondering if Manuel had already made up his mind when he pretty much forced Coach P's hand into hiring Weist as OC. Let P either turn it around in 2013 or you already have your guy in the system for a smoother transition. Hold a search committee (to pacify whoever needs pacifying) in the faint chance a big name would consider UConn but already have your guy in house. Looks a lot like the Ollie hiring. Give it a trial run and see if it works.
