And a good guy too. How could you do that to him Aaron? Wake should have beaned you the next time he saw you but that would probably only be a misdemeanor.

It's hard for a major league hitter to be too intimidated by a 55 mph knuckler or a 70 mph heater up and in. Wakefield was a solid citizen in Boston and played whatever role the Red Sox needed, from the bullpen, to swing starter, to regular innings eater. He was never a star but he will retire as a very popular guy (one of "the 25" as they are remembered in the Back Bay) that helped the Red Sox end their championship drought. For that, he'll never be forgotten.

Bad day for Rays hitters first Wakefield retires then the Yanks ship Burnett and 20 mill to the Pirates.

A good knuckleball will intimidate and frustrate hitters. Wakefield was about a .500 pitcher and he ate a ton on innings and for those reasons he was valuable.
