Very ot: St Rose of Lima

One thing I was curious about was the Newtown catholic church's name. Most, tho certainly not all, Catholic Churches in CT are 50-100 yrs old, long before there was much of a Latin American pop. Thus was surprised to see a church named after what I think is th patron saint of Latam. Anyone know the history of that church?

I don't know the answer but I MAY be able to find out. That is the home parish to my daughter's in-laws, and our grand-daughter was baptized there in earlier December 2012. I did not pick up any literature, but I will ask the in-laws to see if there is anything that would have your answer. They are very active in the parish.

I loved the church so much when we went to the baptism, I planned to attend mass there as a visitor from time to time. I absolutely loved Father Bob even then. Now I am going to hold off for awhile.

The saint has been around since the 1600s, and churches have been named after her in the States for long. St. Rose of Lima church in Buffalo has been around since 1925.

Good question. I never thought of Rose of Lima as a reflection of America's getting more Hispanic.

The parish was established in 1859 and is one of the oldest parishes in Fairfield County. In the 1960's the church I recall was a wood building. Sometime after they constructed the current building.
