LIONS OPEN THE SEASON RANKED #1 IN THE NAIA

COSTA MESA, Calif. - For the 45th time in Vanguard's history, the Lions received the No. 1 spot in the first edition of the 2018-19 NAIA Division I Women's Basketball Coaches' Poll, as announced by the national office on Tuesday.

"It's nice to have your program respected enough to get such praise." Head Coach Russ Davis said. "We now need to prove on the court that we are worthy of the ranking. We're used to having a bullseye on our backs so that wont be an issue."

After making it to the elite eight last year and receiving the No. 1 ranking in the week two poll, Vanguard aims to carry on its legacy of success. Although they lost All-American Amber Alexanders and seven seniors, VU has a breadth of young talent and seasoned returners.

Tip-off for the 2018-19 vanguard Women's Basketball season is just weeks away with the team in hot pursuit of another GSAC Championships and a trip to the NAIA National Tournament. The storied program has been busy practicing in The Pit and mixing in a large recruiting class after losing seven seniors to graduation a year ago who spent a combined 19 years wearing the Blue and Gold. NAIA Hall of Fame Head Coach Russ Davis is back patrolling the sidelines for his 23rd season and he welcomes new assistant coach Maiya Michel to the mix.

"I think we have a deep, talented team that can make a deep run in the NAIA tournament as our roster provides great versatility in the styles we can play," Davis remarked after the conclusion of a preseason practice. "Our perimeter play will be improved and our forwards can go inside and out, largely in part due to the players we have added who feature good size and playing experience and they will make huge impacts this season for our team."

Fun Fact - Lou's older sister Karlie (Stanford '17) is in her 2nd season as an assistant coach with Vanguard. Karlie is also currently on the LA spark's 2018 roster.

Breaking news.......This game WILL be televised (for free) via live stream by "Huskies All-Access". :D

We'll see Sunday. She could be. But she is listed as one of the coaches on their roster current roster.

On the thread for overseas games she has stats for the Braine team. Maybe when she comes home she helps Vanguard? :)

I am sure she was asked to provide a full scouting report on Lou. ;)

Karlie is in Belgium. She has helped Vanguard before she left and last season.

Women's Basketball vs Vanguard on 11/1/2018 - Stanford University

That's a heck of a way to open your season. With not one, but two A** Whuppins. They no match up with either of these programs, not even a little. No doubt Vanguard will take something from both of these games, and use it to their advantage throughout the season.

Stanford and UConn, two of the best and most respected programs in the country. Perhaps that's why Vanguard will open their season as the #1 ranked team in NAIA Division 1.
