How Virginia is studying up to earn higher marks on the football field
Some key comments-
"She wants the Cavaliers to have the same facilities and staffing levels of the Power 5 schools that win consistently. But to do that, she and her staff need to sell more tickets and engage more donors. While Williams has worked quickly to do what she can to give Mendenhall what he needs, she knows she and her staff will need to raise millions more to get the Cavaliers on par with the schools they consider their peers."
"FBS football programs are allowed to have five full-time strength coaches. Places such as Alabama, Georgia and Ohio State would hire a dozen or so if allowed, which is why the schools voted to restrict the number. But Virginia restricted itself even more. When Williams arrived, Mendenhall had “two-and-a-half to three” strength coaches working with football. That number was raised to five.
Mendenhall also had a tiny recruiting staff. The top programs have massive operations, and most good programs have a staff of people who help identify prospects and then provide an open line of communication — recruits and their families are allowed by the NCAA to call school staffers anytime — and support during official and unofficial visits. “Our coaches, obviously were doing more work, not only coaching, but then evaluating and finding and measuring that against staffs where their coaches were coaching while others were evaluating and finding,” Mendenhall said. “We were just late. And my staff is from a whole different part of the country. We needed to be faster rather than slower, and we were slower.” So Williams found money to help Mendenhall beef up that staff. She estimated that the improvements would cost Virginia about $2.5 million over five years."
