USF's JoseF to Dallas Wings

Jose has achieved just about everything you could achieve as a basketball HC, with the exception of winning a national championship. I believe that he sees an opportunity in the pros to reach a goal that will likely never happen in the college game.

As many have discussed throughout the WNBA season, there is a unique opportunity for Dallas to get very good immediately. Of course that starts with Paige, maybe the best young player in the game. Add in a potential #1 draft pick along with just about every veteran player hitting free agency and it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to see how the Wings could put together a championship caliber team for next season and beyond.

Much of this comes back to Paige. There are a lot of players who will want to play with Paige, an extremely talented basketball savant and wonderful teammate, who makes everyone around her better. Apparently she has that same pull for top level coaches as well.

We shall see. Many of us thought that Dallas was on the upswing back in '23 and then things went bad, quick.

I don’t know that Dallas has ever had all the stars aligned quite as well as they do right now. The Wings will never have a better opportunity to build a championship team than the upcoming year. If they don’t, then the owners, GM & HC should all be fired for gross incompetence.

I don't know if the stars are more aligned or not. So many factors depend on their roster and who stays, goes, or gets added. The Wings are in a nice but challenging transitional phase of their franchise and they gotta give the new coach a grace period of at least three years to build a team.

Here’s the math. Dallas has the best young player in basketball and the best odds for the #1 pick. Just about every veteran in the W is a free agent. The Wings will have substantial cap space to play with once the new CBA is finalized. They’ll have a new practice facility and new arena within the next 2 seasons, and Big D is a pretty attractive city to call home. Paige is doing and will do her part to elevate the Wings, and will no doubt be involved in recruiting veteran players to join the roster.

Jose was a great initial step for Dallas. I am not suggesting that the Wings should win a championship next season. But everything is in place for the team to be substantially better immediately, with the expectation that they should be able to compete for a championship over the next few seasons.

We shall see how it all plays out. Naturally you want them to do well.

There's also one other advantage for any Texas team: no state income tax.

.-.
Two questions for the Wings this off season:
1- Who will Dallas pick in the draft? Most people think Betts is the best choice, but I have my doubts because she cannot do anything beyond 4 feet. I think this may be an important year for her to try to develop her mid-range shot, that's of course if Cory will let her. Awa Fam, I think that's her name, is thought by many as the best in the draft. She may be but can she play now or does she need time to develop into a good pro player? Another thought, Olivia Miles which will enable Paige to play off the ball. Azzi?
2- This is a really the big question. What free agent can the team, or Paige convince to come to Dallas? They can probably afford two good players, as they have a tremendous amount of cap space as most of their team, at least the ones that will be protected, are first and second year players. Plus, these young players can also act as trade bait to get the player or players that the Wings want via trade.
I would love it if they can swing taking Kelsey Mitchell and Sophie Cunningham. A scorer and an enforcer for Paige. How nice.
