Just looking at the depth chart makes me so excited for next year.

We are so young this season.

10 of 11 starters slated to return on offense, 6 of 11 on defense.

In addition to that, many of the 5 departing on defense have players on the 2 deep that see good time in games this year. Per one example, Campeni is fantastic this year (especially against the run), but being able to fill in Mikal Myers as the #1 there next year leads me to believe there will be very little step back, if there is any at all.

Very good point. Also the defense has always had a next guy up mentality and I wouldn't expect that to change.

And EJ Levenberry, LB transfer from FSU, is eligible next season.

Maybe. We're going to miss Vann and Stewart, though. We might hold a magnifying glass to their performances week to week, but we have no guarantees the next LB's will be better.

Might not be better next year, but when Junior Joseph, EJ Levenberry, Cameron Stapleton and Luke Carrezola are all seniors our LBs are going to be frightening.

Where's the Freshman WR from Canada, not on the 2 deep?

Thomas, Lucas, and Beals all need burn. I haven't followed Lemelle that closely.

All four, plus the canadian ice man are very strong.

The WR Depth Chart hasn't changed since game 1 -- not a lot of effort put into depth chart week to week. Lemelle has two receptions - Mayala 1 reception.

If he takes Kevin Murphy's redshirt off after half a season for anything less than a true material role in the defensive rotation I'm going to scream
Didn't Bob do this last year as a way to reward youngsters who were doing well in practice but didn't actually burn their redshirts? I sorta recall with maybe Dan Oak.

I don't think we will miss Stewart THAT much. I may be in the minority but he has underachieved in my opinion.
Vann sure, but this crop of LBs waiting to feed is going to be pretty darn good.

Junior Joseph hasn't knocked himself out of a game with open field tackling technique this season, as far as I can tell. Baby steps.

They're a good defense so far, but they can be great.

Then why aren't they on the field more?

Don't get me wrong, I think this defense has played very admirably, but I see the weakest unit being the LBs and if there was substantial talent it would have already supplanted Stewart and Vann. Maybe the FSU transfer turns out to be something, but that begs the question about his losing playing time when he was there. I just don't see the next Sio or Wilson or Smallwood. Good players - sure, but I don't see the playmakers and we badly need an edge rusher.

It can get confusing w/ the rotation of staff and defensive scheme (3-4, 4-3, etc...) to keep track who is where...

They are a young group still developing --Joseph (RS So), Walsh (Jr) (first yr in college as LB), Carrezola (So) - all double digit in tackles, then Stapleton (RS so), Diggs (So) and Hicks (RS Jr). Then there;s the group of true freshman...

3 of 5 top tacklers on team are LB's - Joseph, Stewart and Walsh in that order.

I agree with all you say medic. My only point is that if we had another Moore or Lutrus or Fincher in the wings I think they would be on the field constantly. The group we have are playing solid ball. I don't see NFL talent and they have not been successful making runs. We don't blitz much for two reason - 1 is that it's not a big part of Diaco's defense; and 2 is that when we do, we don't get to the QB. I simply haven't seen the string of NFL talent we had for quite a while.

I think they are good but not great. That probably does have a lot to do with the scheme. Not a lot of darting in to make plays as there was under Don Brown and Hank (sort of). The issue I have with Stewart is his fundamental tackling. It lacks. Too many missed tackles that have been differences. I do hope and think they will get better as the season progresses.
