Reasoning is that it allows Durant, Westbrook and Harden to come off the bench as a unit. Truth be told the USA is screwed if the starting small forward is the difference between Gold and anything else.
Also, while Melo is a bit of a , he's consistently represented the USA for almost a decade now and there's something to be said for rewarding loyalty and consistently showing up.
