Some post-game thoughts:
That would be a misunderstanding of what the spots for the 11th and 12th player are for. Those spots are for insurance against emergencies, not development. In an emergency whether it is a major injury or just the team playing poorly you want experience. Asjha is there because she was the best equipped to defend centers if someone like Sylvia went down, while also being the best offensive counterpoint if Tina or Sylvia were struggling against international play offensively. Both of those situations have happened to this point.
Scotter was right. The team needed a physical and experienced presence in the post in the 2nd half and Asjha delivered.
Some post-game thoughts:
- Kudos to the Aussies who saved their best game for the USA. I didn't think they could continue to shoot as well in the 2nd half if for no other reason than the USA's defense would improve and it did.
- Great strategy to get inside Dee's head by playing her very physical. It worked (w/ the help of a couple of bad calls) but Dee still made her mark on the game. Those two 3s she made to start off the 2nd half were huge and relaxed the team. A bad start in the 2nd half could have been disastrous.
- What a great game by Tina Charles in her first Olympics. Her post-game interview more than makes up for Geno, CD, Shea and Marissa not sitting in gyms watching AAU games. Tina played so-so in the game against Canada; do you think Christine Dailey was in her ear after that game?
- Sue did just what we've come to expect: greatness and calmness in big games.
- Maya gave a little of everything: big shots, dumb passes; poor shot selection; missed rebounds and a huge steal to give the team momentum.
- Whalen and Siemone were terrific; Catchings' effort is just unmatched.
