A great article on the USA Basketball site that gives from soup to nuts Birds arrival on the USA team and her evolution to the leader she has become:

...Dawn Staley and Sheryl Swoopes took her under their wing...

“I think from a point guard standpoint, they were kind of grooming me to take over in the future,” said Bird. “So they were both in my ear and helped me in trying to get used to the international game, because it actually was different. It can be an adjustment for some players, but overall 2002 was a great experience.”

It was good to get in here and clean some stuff up on the defensive end. We had a few miscues against Canada, which is expected.

Like defending the pick and roll.

After all those years, I am still amazed by Sue Bird. She is just as competitive and tough as Diana Taurasi. She can look like a cover girl when she is killing you.

I am wondering if this focus on Bird is the way of a farewell tour? I hope she is still in the mix for 2016, but ...
