USA 3 X 3 to Play for the Gold

Beat Belgium in a tough physical game 18-14. Was a one point game with 30 seconds left. Even though the game was close didn't think USA would lose.

Belgium had Ann Wauters on their team a 6'5" center who had stints in the WNBA

Russia and Czech Republic will play approx 8:15 for the right to play Team USA.

Looks like USA will play Russia for the Gold Medal. Gold Medal game is scheduled for 11 AM today. Czech Republic is not giving them a good game. Still 5 minutes left and anything can happen. Russia is a physical team.

Help me understand this whole 3x3 thing. Where did it come from? What is the purpose of it? Why don't they just play standard 5x5 basketball?

Russia Dominates the Czech Republic and wins 13-5 Russia plays tough physical defense and USA may have to hit their outside shots to beat them. Can't see USA scoring many points driving to the basket. It will be the Russian WOMEN against USA's Girls.

Do you think it will ever be in the olympics?
I still don't see the need for it though, Why not five? More kids, more participation, more fun, no?
Plus, when I look at the play, it seems more individual oriented rather than team oriented, less going on. Far less strategy it seems.
Does anybody else agree or am I just nuts?

Similar to the game I grew up playing in PS 94 Schoolyard and Gym (Bronx), Reservoir Oval (Bronx) and Jewel Avenue Park Queens in the 50's

If the offensive teams shot hit the rim, the defensive team had to return it to the foul line before going on offense.
Fouls resulted in an out-of-bounds throw-in.
Was played 3 on 3 and 4 on 4.
Also called half-court.
No extra credit for longer shots.

FIBA tried to get 3 X 3 basketball in the 2016 Olympics and it was defeated. I suspect at some point it will be an Olympic Sport.

Two minutes into the game it looks like it's USA quickness and Athleticism against Russia's Physical play. Score is 2-2

4 Minutes into game USA leads 7-2 USA getting to the rim which I didn't think they would be able to against Russia's experience and physicality.

10-5 Four Minutes left in the game. Russia has missed layups.

12-5 Three Minutes left. USA playing better team ball, Russia missed layups and sloppy play

14-5 Two Minutes left Loyd playing great for Team USA. Don't know stats, but USA is controlling the boards.

USA Wins the Gold Medal. Completely outclassing the much more experienced and physical Russian Team Final 15 - 8 Announcers seemed surprised at how easy this USA team beat the Russians who were easily beating the other teams they faced.

Sort of like asking why do people play nine ball instead of just 8 ball? Or downhill instead of slalom ? Or beach 2x2 volleyball instead of indoor 6x6?

Just another form of competition for people to enjoy given a few of the same basic ingredients

BTW the Men haven't faired well in the Men's Draw in 3 X 3 World Championship Tournament. Men have 1 Silver medal in four tries. Meanwhile the USA Women have won 3 Gold and 1 Bronze Medal. If I recall correctly USA had injuries in 2011 and couldn't field a team in the Medal Round.

Qatar Rich in Basketball History won the Gold Medal in the Mens Draw. Won 18-13.

Like the Olympics I doubt if many of the Qatar basketball players were actually born in Qatar.

I believe, IIRC, that you only needed 1/16 heredity to play for a country in the Olympics.

As a former basketball player, I loved 3v3 much better than full court. Less running, more touches, less congested court. Never thought I'd see the day that the game was formalized.

Here on the west coast too. 2x2, 3x3, 4x4, 5x5 depending on available players. We usually played winner's outs to 21, win by 2. No three point line then. (I'm old)
