Yes, because somebody had to be a placeholder in what would have ended up being a decade-long title streak.

Upset of UConn is good for the game? - It depends on whose bench you're sitting behind. I always sit behind UConn's bench. So no, that loss was not good for me or the game. :(

South Carolina finally has their basketball program off the ground. Glad they never got Calhoun.

The Big Ten is aching for stronger women's (and men's) basketball, I hear?

The strength of UConn is good for the game. Look at what it did for Mississippi State. Their desire to beat UConn motivated them to put in the effort to become good enough to beat UConn. The upset is just the result of that. The streak forced everyone else to do something about improving themselves; because the status quo was UConn's winning.

TRANSFERS, that's the talk of the tournament winners. And two can play that game, UCONN getting a couple of blue chippers for the next run. Dawn has helped recruiting, and an article said she hired an offensive specialist to compensate for her admitted coaching gaps. Do all roads now go through Columbia, SC?

UConn was suppose to lose 5 or 6 games this season. It just took longer than everyone thought.

BTW, the Writer of the linked article is a AVID Lady Vols fan.

Not sure if the loss is good for WBB or not. As a UConn fan, its definitely not.

My concern is what will the National Media use to highlight Women's Basketball. Will it get any National exposure? Did the UConn Winning streak only benefit UConn or did WBB benefit as well with more exposure for Women's Basketball. For National Media attention purposes Dawn and South Carolina winning the Championship was for the best if it was not to be UConn.

As someone put it, uconn losing will be more remembered this season than SC winning the NC!

I suppose it's good to hear what others say about UConn basketball. While the writer, whoever she is, is definitely a fan of WCBB, she seems to have a rather large axe to grind against UConn, which could be explained by someone's comment that she is a TN partisan. hat'd explain it, all right.

That said, she is probably right that it's good for WCBB overall. The loss generated interest in and of itself; so many people knew about the streak that there was tons of interest in that game and its outcome. Also, the loss leaves the impression, correct or not, that anyone can beat anyone on any given night, which is what has generated excitement in the men's game. It will also leave casual fans with the (incorrect) idea that there will be parity at the top of WCBB next year, which should generate some interest as well.

Odd that the writer argues that the idea that... if people "don't like UCONN's dominance, then improve your game, is not easy." Then wraps up the article by saying teams "are getting better."

Ok... first it's not supposed to be easy!!! Second, I suppose UCONN's history gives them an edge in recruiting, but the had to work hard to get there, and out of the HoopGurls top 100 players each year UCONN does not get them all!!!

Does anyone know what the tv ratings for this year's NC game were compared to prior years? That would be one indicator of fan reaction to Uconn's loss.

The premise of the article -- UConn losing is good for the game -- is certainly a fair point and worthy of discussion. This particular author and this particular article do a really bad job of it. In fact, much like her friend the moderator of the vol message board, I'd say the point of this poorly written article was to find a way to diminish UConn and its accomplishments.

Apparently, there is this thing called a "modus operandi banter" that surrounds the UConn team. I know, what the heck is that? It's not a disease, but might as well be one. It's bad. The MOB has spread throughout the "general basketball community" and the primary symptom is that fans who are tired of UConn winning are labeled "haters." A vaccine may be necessary!!

Ratings were up:

and on a similar note:

On a different night of the week. That completely skews any comparison of ratings.

The ratings Sunday night were very good and provide a strong argument for keeping the Friday/Sunday format in play even though the early game on Friday night did not do very well. The lead-in to Sunday night baseball was a very good idea as viewership for MSU/SC peaked between 8-8:15.

MSU/SC game was the highest rated since UConn/ND in 2014 which was a Tuesday night game.
MSU/UConn did very well on Friday night, though the Stanford/SC game in the earlier time slot did not.

Greenville SC led all markets Sunday night (9.3), followed by Hartford (7.0) and Knoxville (6.1).

Sure. But 3.8 million for MSU-SCar was a huge rating for a WBB game no matter how you slice it. For reference, it also beat the Cubs-Cardinals opening day MLB game that followed it.

This year was a depleted UConn team of overachievers. They lost the top three picks to the pro game. This is no gauge to compare the progress of other teams. Those other teams are going to suck all over again starting next year. Congrats to the current champ and enjoy it while it lasts.
