I get that she's not especially quick, but neither is PSU as a whole. And if she was getting double-teamed in the paint on every possession, what on earth was the rest of the team doing about it?

I mean, if you look at their schedule, their OOC was pretty weak except for Georgia. Merkle was pretty much unchallenged by the other creampuffs they played. The warning sign was probably that loss to SJU, who shouldn't have been able to challenge the PSU front court. But they're scrappy and that was too much for the PSU backcourt (12 TOs!). Then B1G conference play begins and they are crushed game after game. The article focuses on the Minnesota game and tries to blame this on Merkle. But their entire team is outplayed except for Gabby Elliott.

I expect Merkle has something to offer at a higher level of competition. But she will need a lot of guard support, and Maryland can provide that. She won't be great, but she won't be useless either. More or less just like Del Rosario -- tall and slow moving.
