In honor of summertime ramblings, I'll share my personal theory. I'll even call it a conspiracy theory, so people can put it in proper looney tunes context if they wish.
I think the bottom line reason, as others have suggested, is that Ms. Davis never showed any interest in UConn, so UConn focused elsewhere. My theory pertains to the reason for the lack of interest.
The narrative starts way back in 2003. Brittany Hunter's stepdad, who posted on the boards as Newbie1, is trying mightily to swing Britt, who has a preference for UConn, in the direction of Duke. He develops a hatred for Geno in the process, using anything he can think of as an excuse to badmouth the UConn coach. This continues after Britt's commitment, and he goes so far as to suggest he's engaging in a "Big Bad Wolf" campaign to influence other parents of prominent players against UConn.
Newbie succeeds, temporarily, in getting Britt to Duke. But she eventually transfers to UConn, where she's wanted to be all along. Newbie eats enough crow to accompany her onto the Gampel floor for senior night. He at some point claims he was only woofing with the Big Bad Wolf campaign with the object of annoying and consternating UConn fans (who, needless to say, return his love).
Britt's immediate successor as NPOY is another Midwestern player, Candace Parker. Newbie runs his own chatboard or blog or something in Ohio, is very active in Midwest high school girls' basketball circles. My conspiracy theory begins to solidify when posters on the orange board chortle and snicker over how Mr. Parker has snubbed Geno in a recruiting season encounter, supposedly insulting and walking away from him. If true, why do this?
The Davis and Parker families are longtime close, both living in Napierville, IL before the Davises move to Georgia. No doubt in the world they talk recruiting. Ms. Davis early on commits to Tennessee, following in Ms. Parker's footsteps. She later decommits. For whatever reason, neither Ms. Parker nor Ms. Davis ever show the slightest interest in UConn or have anything good to say about it. This seems an odd contrast to many of the top players before and since.
So, like any good conspiracy theorist, I insist, until proven wrong, on connecting those dots. The Big Bad Wolf ended up in hot water, but not before he'd been bad for a while.
