The Huskies received some good news going into their five-day holiday break, as UConn was ranked No. 1 in the Associated Press rankings for the first time this season and 243rd week in program history.

Following former No. 1 Stanford’s loss to unranked Texas Sunday afternoon and UConn’s 97-53 clobbering of Oklahoma, the Huskies received 19 first-place votes, well ahead of those received by Oregon (5), Oregon State (4) and South Carolina (1). That group of four, along with Stanford, round out the top five of the rankings.

It was UConn’s first No. 1 ranking since Dec. 31, 2018, right before the Huskies fell on the road to Baylor.

At least the team can go home for the holidays and not have to explain why they aren't as good as past years. And I am sure that Geno/CD will waste no time in showing them how "incomplete" they really are.

So in a year when UConn was down and all of the pollsters had the Huskies anywhere from #3 to #6, once again UConn has found itself as the #1 ranked team in America. Yes I know. There’s a lot more basketball to be played. But this current situation, with the Huskies back in an all-too-familiar spot, can’t possibly be good for womens basketball...

In the 38 NCAA Women's Basketball tournaments held thus champions have held the AP Poll No. 1 position at some point throughout the year 63% (24/38) of the time.

Champion Highest AP Ranking:
#1 = 24 teams
#2 = 8 teams
#3 = 4 teams
#5 = 2 teams

You may say that means 37% (14/38) haven't held it. True, but UConn hasn't been one of those teams.

Nice bit of information. So here’s a question for you. When was the last season the Huskies did not hold the #1 spot in the polls for at least some period of time during the season?

Since their first championship season in 1994-95 there have been 5 years where they weren't No. 1 in AP poll, the most recent being in 2011-12, where although they were in the Top 4 the whole season they were never No. 1.

So in the other 20 years they have won championship 55% (11-20).

I have read multiple times here, regarding UConn entering the #1 spot through the "back door". Not once did I read on which door Stanford used to move into the #1?

Call me crazy but I actually think this year's team is in a better position to win it all than last year's team even with the well documented wesknesses without Pheesa and Lou. So I'm sure you are thinking how does he come to that conclusion?
1. It's sort of a down year with all teams having considerable weaknesses. Even OR. I think the loss of Cazorla is a big issue so far for them.
2. Players 5,6,7,8 on the UConn depth chart are playing better at this point than those in the same spots last year.

You nailed it; iT CAN'T BE GOOD FOR WOMEN'S BASKETBALL!!. All those recruits that Uconn wants--WON't COME now that it's ranked number 1. Who wants to play for the top team. REAL players want to make a 40th team an NC contender--or so I'm told!!!
