The UConn women's soccer team beat New Hampshire 2-0 at Morrone Stadium to advance to the 2nd round of the NCAA tourney. The Huskies got 2nd half goals from Sam Maguire and Danielle Gottwik. For the 2nd round they travel to face Penn State, probably next Friday.

UNH didn't use a sub the entire game? I've seen coaches fall in love with players but to think there wasn't a player or 3 on the bench who could have come in and hustled for 10 minutes a half to allow a starter some recovery is mind-boggling when you're in a playoff situation against a good team. Must do wonders for the morale of the athletes on the bench too. A .500 team but no one on the bench is good enough to play.

As for UConn a good scrappy game. They began to dominate in the second half. 2 big shots put them ahead and the defense was not exposed to the extent they were against USF down the left side. They may have made a change personnel wise. If they can be available positioning wise and keep the passes on target we will be a tough opponent in the next round.

Up next, UConn will travel to Happy Valley and take on No. 8 Penn State in NCAA Second Round action. Kick-off is tentatively set for Friday, Nov. 21 with time to be determined.

Dropped the proverbial close one:

UConnWSOC9:23pm via TweetDeck
FINAL: No. 8 Penn State 1, #UConn 0. The Huskies end 2014 with a 14-5-5 record and a trip to the second round in their 29th NCAA Tournament.

PSU scored 7 minutes in and that was it.

Overall a good year for the women's soccer team. They got unlucky in having to face a very good Penn State team in the second round.

The first effects of the AAC on our athletic programs is being felt in soccer. Men's soccer was unseeded as a top 10 team last year and failed to get in as a regular season champion this year. UConn women's soccer reward for winning the AAC tournament was a 2nd round game with a 2 seed.

The soccer programs will never every cent of the money from Rizza to compensate for the anchor known as the AAC.

I've read of a number of complaints on how the selection committee for the women's tourney matched up the field, where uncommonly strong teams were matched together in the first round, while in other cases weaker teams like Harvard and Central Connecticut faced each other in opening round games. And this year, the American only got 1 team (Tulsa) into the Tournament. Not good. Not saying UConn deserved an entry 9they did not); but, I thought USF my have done enough to get in. The American women did get 3 invites with UConn getting tot he second round and UCF advancing to the 3rd (so far).
