The perennial winners in any sport draw the ire of fans across the nation. I hear and see people complain that Bama is too good, or gets the best recruits, or pays players and their families. Similar things are said about UConn wbb. Geno and Saban are frequently called the best, and both are frequently called less flattering things too. Today I heard an interview with Derrick Henry , a former Bama star currently playing for the Titans NFL club. Henry was being harassed by the guys, asking him if he was paid to play at Bama, and criticizing fellow Bama alumni. Henry said he liked playing in the NFL, and that he was prepared for it by his time at Bama. He said they knew they could win games at Bama, because their practices were harder than the games they played. That sounds like the familiar refrain we hear from UConn players and alums. People hate Bama, and they hate UConn too. And they hate them because they are so good, and in many ways so similar. Both Geno and Saban get great recruits, and make them great players through a system that emphasizes the program and culture of working harder than others to stay at the top. Being the best requires giving the most, and both schools honor that tradition.
