College baseball with this year's UConn baseball team has a variant on that theme. Highly touted young pitchers who failed as relievers are getting a second life as midweek starters. It seems like a way of rehabilitating highly touted prospects out of the limelight of weekend conference series. Like Ronnie Rossomando, PJ Poulin came out of high school as a highly regarded pitcher who was not redshirted in his first year in college ball. People may forget, but Poulin was given a few high profile late inning relief jobs right out of the chute at the beginning of last season. These relief appearances did not go well for Poulin, as it seemed that he struggled mightily with his control more often than not. This continued into early this season until Coach Penders started giving Poulin the odd spot starting assignments. No doubt that like Rossomando, Poulin needed some time to build up his arm strength in order to show himself off as a starter. Today came the first real fruits that this starting experiment with Poulin seems to be working, as he pitched 5 solid innings with no evidence of the control problems he has experienced in the past. Poulin will no doubt get more chances for a few more midweek starts this season. We shall see if he is able to build off of his performance today and show continued improvement.
