First 2 innings bases loaded and only 1 out and can't score in either inning. More of the same so far.

Heading to the B4, UConn 2, Rutgers 2. The Scarlet Knights tie this one up with a sac fly and an RBI double

UConn strands 8 runners in the first 3 innings. Now the pitching is reverting back to their control issues. Hitting the first 2 batters of the 5th throw in a wild pitch and just like that they are trailing 3-2.

Throw in 2 walks in a row including one with the bases loaded and now trailing 4-2. You can just about script every game for this team. Many missed opportunities on offense and great pitching that ends up breaking down due to walks and HBP's.

.-.
Add on back to back errors by McDowell and Over and now it's 6-2.

Imploded...

... but nice to see then battling back w/ a 2 run Melley homer after Rutgers gives up lead off walk.

Well we return the favor with a leadoff walk and he scores. 7-4. Then we have a man on third with 1 out, once again they are playing the infield back giving us a run and Yavorone strikes out and Siena flies out. You have to make contact. This team absolutely implodes all the time and it just get's ridiculous to see.

Marzi is scheduled to pitch the second game of the series tomorrow, after they finish up the first game. Last I heard, the Huskies had TBA for the third game, so it would seem that Tabakman's back is making him questionable. If Tabakman can't go tomorrow, I would think Ward would get the nod. The other effect of of a possible Ward start will be the effect that it has on the bullpen, as Penders does not have a lot of arms that he trusts out there to do the possible relief work needed for 2 plus games. I'm sure he's hoping Radue can finish out the first game.

I tuned into WHUS a couple of minutes ago, and the first game had already restarted. 7-4 Rutgers, top of the 9th.

.-.
There's one positive out of this game. Ryan Radue throws 3 scoreless innings in relief. Maybe he can become another reliable guy out of the pen.

UConn gets a run in the bottom of the 9th, end up losing 7-5.

Second game. UConn gets only one hit in the the 1st inning, but it is a bases loaded clearing double by Bobby Melley. Huskies lead 3-0.

UConn has a nice rally in the bottom of the 3rd, scoring 3 more runs. 6-0 lead for Marzi going into top of 4th.

.-.
Marzi strikes out the side in the 5th. I'm sure Penders is hoping Marzi can go a long way in the first game, saving most of bullpen for the next game today.

As I understand it, this game is the last of the day, and Sunday's game is off because of the weather. The staff can go all out today with no game until Tues.

Chris Jones on WHUS just said there is still a game following this one. Of course, he may not be up on the latest information.

Game 3 about to start, Brian Ward is pitching for UConn. The rain is coming back in, so it will be interesting to see how many innings they get to play in Storrs.

.-.
WHUS post game interview. Penders says he hopes Tabakman can go next weekend.

Game Notes

- Bobby Melley is 20-for-39 (.513) with six extra base hits and 15 RBIs in UConn’s last 11 games.
- Anthony Marzi has 15 strikeouts over his last two starts. He is now tied with Jesse Carlson (2000-02) for eighth in program history with 186 career punch-outs.
- Marzi also became the seventh player in UConn history to eclipse 250 career innings, moving into seventh all-time with 250.1.

UConn and Rutgers will resume game two of the doubleheader tomorrow morning at 11 a.m. Brian Ward (Milford, Conn.) started for UConn on the hill and tossed a scoreless top of the first before the game was halted with UConn at bat in the bottom of the frame.

As I was expecting, the third game of the series has been cancelled.
