Georgia State Scouting Report

UConn is 0-1 against GAST. They defeated us last year in the only match up, 35-14 down in Atlanta.

Team Notes:
  • GAST has a first year head coach, Dell McGee. Known as a great recruiter and great RB coach during his 10 or so years at Georgia. The former HC, Shawn Elliot, joined the staff at South Carolina as the TE coach.
  • Their roster is almost completely different from last year's team. 50+ new players, mostly transfers.
  • One NFL draft pick, OT Travis Glover, who went in the 6th round to the Packers.

Offense:
  • New QB is #11 CHRISTIAN VEILLEUX, former Pitt (and Penn St) transfer. However, Veilleux lost his job in week 6 against Marshall, getting benched after one drive. The current (maybe) QB that UConn might face is former 3-star Georgia Tech and Akron transfer, #1 ZACH GIBSON. I don't have a lot of tape on this guy to go on. But the two games he did play so far this year, he looks decent. 68.3% completion rate, 433 total yards, 74 QBR against Marshall, 36.5 against App St. Gibson will run if lanes open up for him. Biggest weakness I see in him is his slow decision making which has gotten him sacked a lot.
  • The primary RB is #25 FREDDIE BROCK, 3-star transfer from Maine. 5'10, 190 LBs. Can be a load to bring down. Half the carries goes to him. The rest goes to #22 MICHEL DUKES, transfer from USF/Clemson. If Dukes is in the play, 50/50 chance he'll catch the ball out of the backfield.
  • On the receiving front, a lot of their receptions goes to their TE #82 DORIAN FLEMMING and the aforementioned Dukes. They each have at least 25 receptions for the year and 200+ yards. Their top WR in terms of total yards and catches is D2 transfer #16 TED HURST. Hurst has 29 receptions for 506 yards. Though half of that came in the first two games.
  • Oline has been decent, but no standouts. With original starter Veilleux, they only gave up 5 sacks in 5 games. Since the switch to Gibson, they've given up 5 sacks in 2 games. The number should be higher with how long Gibson holds the ball. As a unit, the rush blocking has not been great. It seems like most of the long runs are because of Brock's tackle-breaking abilities.

Defense:
Most of the transfers went to the defensive side of the ball. Just about every starter is a transfer. It kind of shows with the lack of chemistry. I see tons of communication issues, blow coverages, and just overall lack of fundamentals. Their best unit is probably their LBs: #33 XAVIER ROBINSON, #48 JUSTIN ABRAHAM, and 4-star Clemson transfer #9 KEVIN SWINT.

Predictions:
I would love to see a bounce back of our running game. GAST has a weak interior DL. App St is one of the worst rushing teams in the country, but they were able to get 180+ yards, 40 above their average. If our offense can just get it together and if our defense plays to their floor, this game shouldn't be close. 28-14 good guys.

This game has worried me all season long. Last year, after a superb effort against a very solid NC St team we went to Atlanta, got punched early and it derailed not only the game but our entire season.

One thing we've demonstrated is that we still don't do all that when when the opponent can play physical against us. We absolutely need to prioritize improving our physicality this offseason.

-> “As an offense, we definitely expect more out of ourselves,” said offensive tackle Chase Lundt, who has been with the program since 2019 and will make his team-high 45th career start on Friday. “We’re preaching to start fast this week, that’s our biggest emphasis going into this game.” <-

-> While his production has attracted more of the defense’s attention, Bell knows he has to get involved right away as the team’s top playmaker out wide. “We’ve got to find a way to put points on the board early and get some momentum for our defense,” he said. “Whether that’s taking an energy shot before the first drive, whatever it may be, we’ve got to find a way to get stuff moving early in the game because we can’t leave our defense out to dry like that.” <-

Ok, 4 games left. Any freshmen you want to see w/o burning a year of eligibility? We saw Montgomery and Welliver early. Someone mentioned seeing Toy. More from them? Others you want to see?
