Gabby vs ND.jpeg

Eleven games into the season and UConn is 11-0, improving every game and getting ready for yet another big test against Maryland. Many statistics are what you would expect, like Katie Lou Samuelson leading the team in scoring or Kia Nurse playing the most minutes. However, there are a few stats that seem odd and out of place. For example, Katie Lou, the 2nd tallest Husky at 6'3", has only 1 blocked shot. Gabby at 5'11" has 10 and Napheesa, at 6'1", has 19. Weird... :p

Other strange statistics include the following:
1. In 242 minutes of play, Crystal Dangerfield has tried only 6 free throws. Kyla Irwin also has 6, but in just 60 minutes.
2. Saniya Chong has attempted only 12 three point shots, making just 4. Those 4 made threes are less than Napheesa's 6.
3. Gabby Williams has 51 assists to lead the Huskies..!! Last season, she had 51 for the whole season..!! :D
4. UConn only has 1 more blocked shot (41 vs 40) than their opponents.
5. Saniya has an amazing 5.0 assist to turnover ratio. Her 25 assists vs only 5 turnovers leads the team.
6. Gabby leads the team in assists and rebounding. First time that has happened since Maya.
7. KLS is shooting 48.2% from inside the 3 pt arc, and 47.4% from outside it. That's less than 1% difference. ;)

Of course, many stats are just what is expected. Consider:
1. UConn has twice as many assists as their opponents (230 vs 114).
2. The Huskies have made more three pt shots than opponents have made free throws (84 vs 72).
3. Opponents are shooting just 36% from the field, 27% from three point range. :)

Go Huskies..!!

Don't forget the other normal stat, UCONN has made more FT's than their opponents have attempted. 146 to 116. (146/187 vs 72/116)

Interesting stuff.

Of course, if we think about these stats in context, some of them are not as weird as they seem.

Blocks are not a core tenet of UConn defense which focuses on team and individual positioning and communication and therefore can be improved through targeted practices and instruction

Blocks are an individual innate skill and are part of the players DNA. It is based on timing and feeling and doing it wrong leads to fouls and poor rebounding position. With so much else to practice, I cannot imagine running "blocking" drills

Of course, Geno would gladly take as many blocks as possible (Kia Stokes, Breanna Stewart) as long as they do not lead to a deterioration of their main defensive responsibilities.

I had compiled some stats over the weekend, but left them home.
Last year, through the same period, UConn had an edge in rebounds of about 9-10 a game(I think it was 40.2 vs 30.4)
This season it is around 39.4 vs 33.5.
So UConn has about one less rebound a game and has let the opponent get about 3 more rebounds a game.
It is a drop off from last year, but considering who is gone, I don't think it is a major concern. If it was a major concern the girls wouldn't be 11-0.
This year there are games vs Baylor and Texas(not on last years OOC schedule). Baylor outrebounded UConn by 10 and Texas outrebounded UConn by 7.

Imagine how many rebounds they could have if they followed the shot. There are times they all stand and watch the shot and it doesn't go in (especially when shooting at 3) and no one moves for the ball. Some are getting better at it now.

Based on Massey ratings last year through 11 games they had played
Ranked teams: #4 ND, #8 MD, #11 FSU, #17 OSU, and #18 DePaul.
Unranked: #40 KSU, #78 Chattanooga, #81 Nebraska, #115 LSU, #255 Cinci, and #548 [sic] Colgate

This year
Ranked teams: #2 Baylor, #3 ND, #5 FSU, #18 TX, #23 OSU, #24 DePaul
Unranked: #26 KSU, #31 LSU, #91 Dayton, #122 Chattanooga, #134 Nebraska

A significant upgrade in opponents to date, making comparison to 2015-16 team a little suspect on things like rebounding margin and MOV. Interestingly, the 3 point shooting defense this year has been significantly better - a result of teams like DePaul hitting a lot of shots last year and not this year. I remember some serious gnashing of teeth relative to a 35% 3 point defensive number a year ago. (Also might be a result of more teams trying to drive and post up with shot blocking not being a particular strength of this team. Stewart made a lot of people change their minds half way to the basket!)

So Gabby is leading the Team in rebounds and assists and some people expect her to be moved to the bench next season! Not to mention she normally guards the other teams best post player.
Her lack of scoring is the only hold up for a AA type of season.

Even though this wasn't one of your favorable (by me) tests---I really enjoyed this analysis! Even Stats show how good Gabby and Napheesa are. What they don't sho w; what an asset Kia is to this team.

Only next year shall we know who does what and how long---Gabby, KLS, Collier, Gabby, Danger how can you keep them from getting loads of minutes next year??? Geno has his work cut out for himself and Christine.
The great thing about the By---most posting are OPINIONs and everyone has one--nothing in the rules say opinions must be accurate. If that were the case--no one would be posting--no one!!

Stewie surely changed the minds of a lot of those attacking the basket---going back another year--the tandem of Stewie and Kiah --it was interesting to see the opponents offense change when Kiah entered the game
It would appear this young team 'with no height"--is doing pretty well for itself.
Thank UCMiami--thanks for the enhanced this year data.
