Geno found out before game time that Crystal would not be able to play due to back spasms. He already knew freshman Anna Makurat was mired in a shooting slump and graduate transfer Evelyn Adebayo hasn't yet grasped the UConn offensive or defensive schemes completely. So he started seniors, Molly Bent and Kyla Irwin, and hoped for the best. What he got from the two senior subs was superb. Consider:
1. Kyla and Molly played a combined 67 minutes. Molly's 31 minutes in a single game compares to 206 minutes all last season.
2. Together they shot 5-8 (62.5%) for 12 points, with 2 threes.
3. Kyla's 6 rebounds, combined with Molly's 4 gave them a joint double-double of 10 boards and 12 points.
4. They also had 8 assists versus just 3 turnovers.
5. Molly's 3 steals gave them a final line of 12 pts, 10 boards, 8 asists and 3 steals. Not bad for two subs..!!
Geno had little choice with injuries and slumps being what they are... It helps that the opponent was Dayton, but the effort was superb and the results more than anyone expected. Maybe Geno knew that all along..!!
Go Huskies..!!
