UConn crushed Ohio State to open their season with a possible N.C. 4-peat down the road.

1. This was the first game played with 4 quarters.
2. Stewie led the scoring with 24 points. She also has 4 assists, 4 blocks and 4 fouls.
3. By the time OSU scored 4 pts, UConn had 14.
4. MoJeff, #4, had 4 assists and strangely, 4 turnovers.
5. Gabby was awesome with 4 assists and 4 steals to go with her double-double in pts & rebounds.
6. UConn scored 24 points in both the first and third quarter, OSU scored 24 total in the first HALF.
7. Kia Nurse made 4 baskets, and had a combined 4 rebounds & assists.
8. Jefferson's ten baskets were 4 more than the three OSU guards combined.
9. Collier made 4 free throws, 4 points from the field & had 4 defensive rebounds.
10. The 44 point loss was the worst home defeat suffered by Ohio State ever...

Go Huskies..!!

I think you really meant: 10. The 44 point loss was the worst home defeat suffered by Ohio State in 4-ever...

And do hope the result won't leave the Buckeyes too 4-lorn, as they are a fun team to root 4 with their 4-bidding schedule similar to UConn's in toughness.

YES, OSU was "fortunate" to lose by "only" 44. Bre was on the bench for a protracted stretch after picking up 4 fouls, and UConn ran a lot of clock in the game in order to move it along. Had Stewart played more and had the Huskies kept up their usual pace, the score could easily have been 125-?

As a side-note, I always wonder how these monumental defeats affect the teams on the receiving end. Psychologically, it can't help. In remarks by the OSU coach, I believe he was writing the season off by talking about the need to bring in more talent to compete. He seemed to be saying that he didn't have enough to be successful. Next year the Buckeyes will get more talent. Will they get more effective/inspired coaching?

huskyd - great side note! I agree the coach was reeling after that beat down. Another statement from the coach after the game that was puzzling to me was --OS coach said "he was surprised that UConn played a zone." Is he saying it never crossed his mind or his assistants? Doesn't OS have a contingency plan for changing defenses? My opinion on the OS coach dropped some after that. OS has a style that can beat every team in the country except 6-8 top teams. OS is still a dangerous team to the rest of the nation.
Let me add a side note - in the recent past Staley of SC said "we are just starting to work on our zone defense." That statement was made in March of last year. I guess they are still working on the zone because OS kept scoring on the man to man and Staley did not make the defensive change. That lack of defense versatility created a very close game. One more reason why UConn is so superior--the best coaching tandem in history and the multi-faceted players who can think their way past any situation.

I'm sure OSU has some strategies for attacking zones, though whether they're effective or not we'll see as now every opponent will try to zone'em to death. BB is a chess match, however, and when one team changes their attack and the other team may change up their defense. McGuff was clearly not prepared for the Buckeyes to hit right off the bat by a zone and he also probably expected that UConn would change to a man-to-man sooner than they did. But none of these moves are made in isolation, and Geno saw that the zone was working well and that OSU was doing nothing effective to exploit any openings, so he stayed with the zone for a long time.

As for Staley, every year is a new year, and whatever USCar has done in practices doesn't make them feel comfortable with playing a zone yet I guess. Maybe by March they'll find some time to work it in this year. Seems like a wise idea considering how well it worked for UConn last night.

4 sure

4 score and 20 points ago, the Huskies Core 4 + G. Williams, brought forth on the OSU wcbb team a tremendous defeat, designed by Geno, and dedicated to the proposition that all wcbb teams are NOT created equal. (Eat your heart out, Abe.)

4 Minutes into the game and tOSU was already down by double digits. The score? 14 to 4.

Is there a way to watch a replay of the game? I remember looking last year and I don't think that SNY offers a replay option.

I love our team this year. Enjoy them. But several other teams including OSU will be pretty good next year and I would be pleasantly amazed if we maintain anything like this. We lose the pair who are likely to be this year's top two scorers, and top two WNBA picks, not to mention two of the best ever all around. If Dangerfield is a Moriah clone, Moriah wasn't a Moriah clone her first year and even most of her second year. Hopefully Butler will be terrific but true posts don't handle the ball. Can Kia be a force if she might have to be the main force? If more plays have to run through Morgan, is that a good thing? She's a great support player, but we don't know what happens when she becomes a center of attention. Same thing for Gabby. Saniya hasn't been trusted. Will Courtney blossom, who knows, it happens, but there doesn't seem to be star quality. KLS and Napheesa will hopefully turn out great, but they will be sophs. Boykin I gather is more of a support player and it seems are most of the incoming class. We are having a great run that hopefully ends up with another NC, but despite rumors to the contrary, UConn doesn't win it all every year. Where Geno separates from almost every other winning coach is that even when we don't win, we are never out of the conversation. They always make New England winters tolerable.

I don't recall which OSU player said this but in an interview with the campus newspaper, she said she hoped the teams would meet in the tournament because she expected a different outcome.

So, she remains upbeat. And truthfully, if you read all of their coach's comments, he is by no means writing off the season. They have a good team and they should have a good season, but he's realistic that he doesn't have the firepower that UConn does.

My policy is NEVER DISAgree With any name ending in NAPLES!!! So I won't
To add a personal observation, of watching Uconn for most of Geno's term---this is the first time(that I remember) I have seen Geno --in a ranked team game--use his Freshmen and Sophs so liberally--some have said he had to--no Geno in the past would have protected his starting five with a defense and only put those younger guys (???) when the game was in hand. I like this approach. He has confidence in them and they in him.!!! Whether has in the past, that's fine, but the point really is---his TRUST and this team will go far with that.

I was also surprised at who came off the bench first. Based on last year I expected to see Chong much earlier. It will be interesting to see if this is a trend and repeats itself throughout the year or was more situational, either reflecting what Geno saw in practice or more specific to the opponent.

Geno has spoken often about his freshmen ===I know he has done this in the past too--but this year he is putting his trust where his mouth is. Putting Katie Lou and Napheesa into the game in the first quarter of a very noisy #6/7 team says to me CONFIDENCE. I think we'll see this happen until the kids screw up and take away the confidence. I like giving the new guys playing time--you can't get game experience sitting on the bench. Practice?? Maybe.

Plus , I think Geno is getting his ENTIRE team ready for the season. He knows that this team will need all parts working efficiently to go the distance. And he wants all those parts with some experience. Working them in , in the teams first game , was HUGE. And it gets better. When the team has Butler and DJB at full speed things could really take off. I was pleasantly surprised to see Saniya in the game. Signs of good things to come I guess.

I fully agree. With experience nearly top to bottom, with the talent on this team--you know the rest.
