As UConn prepares to play St. John's tonight at the XL center, here is a pre-game snack with interesting stats.

1. After 28 games and over 900 minutes of playing time, Aaliyah and Lou have both scored exactly 457 points to lead the team.
2. Aaliyah and Lou have reached their point totals in very different ways. Aaliyah has 1 three point basket and Lou has 61.
3. Lou has 73 defensive rebounds, while Liya has 73 offensive rebounds. (Liya has 251 total boards)
4. In the 4th quarter of the last two victories over Creighton & Villanova, UConn's defense held both teams to 30.7% combined shooting. At the same the time, the Huskies shot 60% from the field and 71% from the charity stripe.
5. Aubrey is 3rd on he team in scoring with 347 points. Dorka is 4th at 302 points.
6. The Huskies free throw % of 75.3% is the best since the 2017-18 season.
7. Against Creighton and Villanova, UConn took 40 free throws (made 29) and 105 shots from the field. That is 145 scoring chances in those 2 games.
8. Opponents took 118 shots vs 105 for UConn, but only 18 free throws. So those two teams had 136 scoring chances.

Note - If a player is fouled while shooting, the shot attempt only counts if the shot is made. The player would get a free throw as well. But if the shot misses (due to the foul) the player doesn't get the missed shot attempt, just two free throws. Keep this in mind when lamenting the total shot attempts comparisons.

Go Huskies..!!

Don't these 4th-quarter statistics undermine the theory that the UConn team is suffering from "fatigue", either physical or mental? If they are, it would suggest that Villanova and Creighton are even more fatigued by the time the fourth quarter rolls around.

That's a good point, and is a correction to my thinking on the subject of comparing shot attempts.

It ties in with the fact that one component of a strong offense is getting to the free throw line more than your opponent. That usually occurs if driving to the basket or competing for offensive rebounds is a big part of a team's game. It usually won't occur if jacking up 3-point attempts is the majority of your offense, e.g., Creighton taking 33 3-point shots out of a total of 58 in last week's game against UConn. So when fans of other (often orange-clad) teams point to the number of fouls called on UConn opponents as an indication of biased officiating, it may also just be an indication that UConn is playing a style of offense that is likely to draw fouls on opponents. (In fairness, it should be noted that Geno sometimes makes the same fallacious complaint, as when he protested during the second quarter of the Stanford National Semifinal game last season that the foul calls were disproportionately against UConn.)

Here is an interesting stat. Nika has 218 assists. The other current starters total 217.

Aaliyah 70

Dorka 69

Lou 46

Aubrey 32

Other quirks:

We are out rebounding opponents by almost 11 per game but only lead in offensive rebounds by 4, 304 to 300.

We have 13 fewer threes than our opponents, 169 to 182, but we shoot a much higher percentage and have 215 fewer three shot attempts.

To the contrary. The last two games were the games where Caroline came back into the rotation (and we had an actual "rotation"), playing most of the fourth quarter in both games.
By comparison, in the previous two games, without Caroline, our fourth quarter stats were 29.2% FG and 22.2% 3PT, and we were outscored in the fourth quarter both times.
