Kia Nurse 2.jpeg

In a game where UConn scored 113 points, it might be hard to pinpoint one critical basket. One could argue it came at the 8:45 mark of the 1st period. The Huskies had missed their first two shots, given up a three-point basket and then a three-point play, the old fashion way. The score was 6-0 Temple, Katie Lou was in warm-ups and out for the game. UConn needed offense quickly to end the Owls hopes and #11 took charge. Kia calmly nailed a three from the right corner. UConn's faithful sat down and breathed a sigh of relief. Then, a minute later, she grabbed an offensive rebound and laid it back up to keep UConn close at 8-7. Kia went on to score 24 points on 9-13 shooting, including 4 threes. This is what she has done all season... ;) Consider:

1. Kia leads the team in total points scored with 281. (Z is 2nd with 266)
2. She has the most made three-point shots at 47. (Crystal is 2nd with 36)
3. Nurse also leads in 3 point % at an even 50%. (Crystal is at 48%)
4. Kia has played a team-high 590 minutes or 32.8 minutes per game.
5. Nurse is the best free throw shooter for the Huskies with 40 makes and 80% accuracy.
6. Inside the arc, Kia is shooting 67% at 50-75.

In addition to her offensive stats, Nurse has become the main shut-down defender, against the other team's leading scorer. Tanaya Atkinson, for Temple, took 14 shots to make her 15 points. Her average coming in was 23 pts per game. Her 3 rebounds were seven below her average. The 4 turnovers versus only 1 assist are probably no fluke either.

Can a Canadian become an All-American...? It's happening before our eyes..!! :)

Go Kia..!!
Go Huskies..!!

Kia leads not only the team, but also the nation, at 50% on 3-point shooting. I watched her in person yesterday and noted that she put good arc on the ball and had excellent ball rotation--remember that she played with the great KML.

Some other top 3-point shooters:

#2, Honoka Ikematsu, a freshman at Robert Morris

#3 (tie) Sophie Cunningham, Missouri

#5 Crystal Dangerfield

#7 Asia Durr

#15 Sabrina Ionescu, Oregon

I posted this at the end of the game thread, but I thought of DavidinNaples when I did: All 10 UConn players who officially took a shot yesterday, shot 50% or better. In fact, only Gabby and Mikayla shot 50%; the the other 8 players shot over 50%.

That's the trouble with Uconn players---Geno feeds them "sneaky" pills before each game--and before we know it--they have filled up all the stats with bigger, better stats--
Thanks David--I really enjoy your twists and facts on games. On these non top ten team--some fans don't see the importance of a game like Tulsa or Temple or other AAC games--this is the Second string training ground--and those you'd expect to learn are learning--and best of all GENO is Teaching..

Indeed @DavidinNaples, it is happening. At this point of the season it would be impossible to keep Kia off any credible 10 player All-American team. The only mystery might be which other Huskies will join her on the list. Nagging injuries are hampering both KLS and Gabby's chances. Crystal and Azura will likely not make it due to lack of pre-season publicity. Although Napheesa is having a good season she is statistically below where she was last year.

Used to be that Nurse's threes were the unexpected frosting on the cake -- the nails in the opponent's coffin, to thoroughly scramble metaphors. Now we're getting to expect them.Don't know if it's senior confidence, the result of more practice, or what, but it certainly has been welcome. Kia has been one of my favorite players for some time now, and it's great to see her name mentioned as a potential AA.

Yet, yesterday, she hit 50% for the game and that was good enough for 4th best on the team!
Kia did make the most on the team, but Crystal, Meg, and Kyla set the bar high for accuracy. Tough competition! ;)

I watched Kia in warmups. It was almost like watching Kaleena. The release, wrist action, and fairly high arc looked very solid. Kia has worked hard to become an elite shooter. As with Kaleena, I now expect every shot to go in.

If there was a way to "like" pretty much every post in this thread, I'd use it.

This is really wonderful seeing Kia ramping it up as the pack is getting ready to round the bend heading to the home stretch.
