During Stewie and MoJeff's senior year, UConn scored 295 three-point baskets. Based on 775 shots from outside the arc, the shooting % was 38.1%. Then Stewie, Mo, and Tuck graduated and 127 of those made threes left with them. Fans worried about the Huskies' shooting without the Big 3..!!
The next year (2016-17), UConn made 302 three-point baskets on 746 shots or 40.5%. Saniya went from 21 threes to 50 and Lou exploded for 119 threes from 78 the season before. Even Gabby made her only three of her career..! Then Saniya and her 50 threes graduated and teams plotted to stop Katie Lou from beyond the arc.
Last year (2017-18), UConn made 302 three-point baskets again, this time on 755 shots for a 40.0% accuracy rate. Injuries and defense held Lou to "only" 96 threes, but Kia raised her total to 85 from 73 and Crystal caught fire with 62 threes. Now the faithful worry about the graduation of the next Big 3, Kia, Gabby, and Azura. With them, go 94 made threes.
Can the Huskies make 300 threes again this season? Maybe, we will see... but the math seems to work every year. Can Crystal raise her total from 62 to 85 and replace Kia as option#2? Can Lou make between 96 and 119 threes? Both seem quite possible. Can Pheesa, who made 22 threes each of the last two seasons, raise that to 45-50? Before you cast doubt, go watch the video posted under Pheesa's New Weapon. Megan made 13 threes on 35 tries for a % of 37.1%. Can she raise that to 30-35 threes?
Clearly, the wild card in this season's effort for 300 threes is Christyn Williams. Can she step up and be the 4th option beyond the arc with 25-30 threes? She will have to adjust to a 3 pt arc that is 20 feet 9 inches away versus 19 feet 9 inches in high school. Can Kyla, Molly or Mikayla improve their combined 10-42 shooting from beyond the arc?
History says the Huskies will find a way to balance three-point shooting with inside scoring. In the last six seasons, UConn has never scored less than 295 threes (twice) and reached as high as 330 (2014-15).
Go Huskies..!!
