The new Big East finally had a chance to showcase the depth of talent in their league. The Big East Conference tournament was held at the Mohegan Sun Arena, viewed on Fox TV and allowed fans for the first time since Covid-19. With as many as four teams possibly vying for an NCAA tournament berth, the stage was set for four nights of great basketball. UConn stole the show with Geno unleashing a 9 player onslaught that alternately bludgeoned opponents with sledgehammer blows and sliced them with surgically precise cuts. No stat illustrates the dominance more than the fact that in 120 minutes of action (3 games x 40 minutes/game) the Huskies trailed for a total of 51 seconds. Nobody got ahead, nobody stayed close. Consider: 1. In three games, the Huskies scored 225 points (75 per game) and gave up only 129 points (43 per game). 2. In 5 of the 12 quarters of play, UConn held opponents to 8 points or less. 3. UConn out rebounded their 3 opponents by 124-77 and created 52 turnovers. 4. Scoring was shared with the new motto of "Everybody Eats." Top 3 scorers in the first game were Paige, Christyn, and Aaliyah. In the 2nd game it was Evina, Dorka and Christyn. In the final game Olivia, Evina and Aaliyah. Six different players at the top in scoring in 3 games. 5. In 3 games, opponents only were awarded 13 free throws. They made 9. UConn went 23-36, an extra 14 points for the Huskies. 6. Opponents shot 30% from the field, missing an incredible 115 of 165 shots. 7. In the 3 games, UConn had 3 players score 30+ points (Christyn 37, Aaliyah 34, and Evina 32) & 4 players score 20+ points (Azzi 25, Dorka 24, Olivia 23, and Paige 20). The Big East tournament was a laboratory experiment for Geno and his staff. Mixing and matching line-ups to find the perfect blend. Almost everything worked and the result was his 20th Big East title, 2nd in the new Big East. Overall, it was UConn's 27th conference title and 16th in the last 18 years. Now, on the the NCAA tournament..!! Go Huskies..!!
