UConn Receivers Get Drilled in Practice (DC)

Asked what he could do to help the group be more consistent, particularly in critical situations, Huskies' leading receiver Noel Thomas looked across the field at the Jugs machine and smiled.

"You see them now," the 6-foot-1 Thomas (19 receptions, 286 yards) said chuckling, yet serious. "It's definitely a focus point, especially coming after this game [a 28-18 loss to Navy]. The receivers, especially in games like that, we have to capitalize on every opportunity. I know in the first half we didn't have a lot of opportunities.

"When we do have those opportunities we have to make sure we catch those passes. That's why we're on the Jugs today, and we're going to be on the Jugs all week."


That's good stuff to hear. The WRs have the potential to be a really outstanding unit, and this team needs it to help kickstart the offense. Shouldn't they be on the jugs gun all week, every week?

When I used to attend NY Giants training camp, every day before practice started Steve Smith would come onto the Field and stand about eight to ten yards away form the jugs gun. He would catch a ball on his left, then one on his right, then one straight away, then repeat this action for about ten minutes. He didn't wait for a bad game or practice. He did it every day.

In a perfect world, yes, our WRs would be working with the jugs for 10 minutes a day. But you're comparing a NFL player to college - you only get so much practice time in college before beginning to worry about coursework, training, and actually practicing plays. It's why you see guys like Tyrod Taylor be absolutely mediocre in college but then after a few years of year-round NFL training and practices, become a decent NFL QB. The only thing a NFL player has to do is prepare to play football 24/7.

This is great to hear. That kid is key to us getting better offesively this year. Teriq Beals too (# 2) if he doesn't get the ball more against BYU then there's something wrong w/ Verucci's eyes. Kids going to be a recieving machine.

It should be only Beals and Thomas getting some opportunities.. That's also up to Shireffs to scan the field a little better. vs. Mizzou he missed a wide open DeLorenzo on a key 3rd down play... vs. Navy, the middle of the field had a few open receivers too... and then late in that game he seemed to focus on throwing to specific receivers... coulda found other guys wide open... He's gotta learn not to stair down certain receivers.. believe in ALL your receivers. Scan the field and hit the wide open man. I'm pretty encouraged that this kid will eventually get it

I think he sometimes predetermines where is is going with the football rather than reading the defense and throwing to the open man. He can learn this over time. The sooner the better.
