For those inclined to wonder about such things - "UConn-Notre Dame on ESPN is Highest-Rated Women’s NCAA Title Game in a Decade"

Perhaps not "the most important women's basketball game ever" as Ms. Lobo and Ms. Lawson offered in the pre-grame. But as they also classified this latest version of an undefeated national champion, "It's in the discussion."

Yeah, but I would think South Bend is part of the Chicago TV market? Isn't South Bend closer to Chicago than Indianapolis?

South bend is 1.5 hours from Chicago and 3.5 hours from Indy.

Now that I've read the article, I'm editing this post. Methinks that one rating point equals two percent. If so, almost two-thirds of Hartford/New Haven were tuned in.

No, a ratings point is the percent of all TV households. (Whether the TV is on or not.)
The "share", which is not indicated in the article, is the percent of all TVs that are on. By definition it is higher than a rating.
So, the game probably did a 30 rating with a 40-50 share. That's very good.

The other thing to note is that the rating is the average over the broadcast. Most TV shows have a flat rating over the broadcast, because who only watches half a show? But sporting events will pick up viewers as channel surfers stick on close games, while others will migrate away if the game gets out of hand. It would be interesting to see the hour-by-hour totals on the game. I would guess that viewership fell, particularly outside of CT, for the last 1/2 hour. In contrast, the TN-CT game was close to the end.

Which leads to the following question: Would we rather have the pleasure of a thorough thumping of the Irish, or a closer game that would have kept casual fan interest up longer and hopefully help the sport for the long term? For myself, I can't decide. I think I should go with the latter but the warm fuzzy feeling of seeing dejected Irish faces is staying with me almost 42 hours later.

For Irish fans, while the game was disappointing, the year was not. If you had told any of us that, after losing the leading scorer in program history off of a 35-2 Final Four team, the year would end in the National Championship game, we would probably not have believed you. Had anyone said in addition, the team would be 37-0 entering said game, we would have referred them for pyschological help. It was an incredible run that came up short to a fantastic UConn team.

As far as WBB, yes, it would have been better to have a closer game. Ideally, a game like last year's BE title game would have been best (I'm talking about the game itself, not the end result, though I would have taken that). It didn't happen, but at least eyeballs were watching for a while.
