UConn No. 72 in Sagarin rankings

For those who are into such things, the first Sagarin ratings of the 2013 season are out.

UConn checks in at No. 72 in between Indiana and Air Force.

As for UConn's 2013 opponents, Michigan is at No. 19, Lousiville (31st) and Cincinnati (36th) top the list. Rutgers is at 48, Central Florida is 52nd, South Florida is 61st, Maryland is 63rd, Southern Methodist is 69th, Temple is 93rd, Towson is No. 116 while Memphis and Buffalo come in at No. 126 and 127.

Since sagarin is based on mathematical models, how can they do this without real world data? Anyone know?

I believe the initial rankings are based on last year's record and last year's records of this year's opponents and opponent's opponents. They only matter BCS wise at the end of the season. After week 4 is good time to check out conference strength. Little use otherwise.

According to Wikipedia, Sagarin uses a Bayesian network with preseason rankings in order to speculate about the rankings until more data is available. Though his algorithm is kept secret for proprietary reasons, I'd imagine last season's rankings combined with how many returning starters, strength of schedule, etc., is used, at least until more current data is available.

Central Florida is ahead of Pitt and Houston is ahead of Syracuse. So I guess our conference additions are better then the ACC's new additions

BTW Towson is ahead of Memphis and Buffalo. Better be ready Thursday.
