This is like the Boston Celtics / Chicago Bulls playoff game a while back when Ray was on fire and couldn't miss and had 55 points or something, and Doc Rivers called a play for Rajon Rondo to shoot the ball at the end of 3 OT.

I'm one that will never shy away from defending a difficult position in any situation, but this one was bad. I've re run it about a hundred times in my head, that entire last drive, and the entire game, and I could build a decent argument, without a doubt, but it all falls apart on the simple concept.

That is that there is nothing but blind faith to go on, that we can get that yard with this offense running smashmouth football.

We couldn't move Maine around at will last week, and we're going to move Navy on the goal line for a yard in their house for a TD and the game on the line with clock down in the fourth? On a hand off to a back 7 yards deep? We haven't been able to reliably get that yard since 2009-2010.

Uhhhh. never mind the clock management. THat's enough to give you an ulcer, but I can actually rationalize it given the plodding nature of our offense as it's developed under Diaco.

I was absolutely sure that Sheriffs was going to run a QB dive, or throw a back pilon fade. It's the only way to run a play there, unless you're confident you can smashmouth power it in from a handoff several yards deep. Also, Johnson had fumbled I think twice already in the game.

I'd bet Niamatuolo was sure that was coming too.

His reaction on video pretty much says all you need to know.

So tell me. Who is the OC? Is it Verducci or Diaco? So did Verducci call a pass and Diaco over ruled him and said run it?

These constant problems of having to call time out due to what appears to be confusion or taking too long to get the play in. Does this fall on Verducci or Diaco?

How the hell should I know?

Somebody had the confidence that we could run a power smashmouth handoff to a back 7 yards deep at the snap and gain a yard in that situation at the goal line, with the game on the line.

Where they got that confidence from, I have no idea, because we don't have the players we had in 2009, to call a power run for a yard when it's 4th and 1 at your own 29 yard line in the 4th quarter.

For example.

Looking at the stats with 0 punts returned. Pathetic, but looking at kick off returns might be why they don't dare return punts. Just don't understand how we can be so bad in that department. We used to be very good.

Navy only punted 3 times. 1 was unreturnable because it went out of bounds, 1 was the bomber misplayed (my opinion) by Lamele. Can't remember the third one definitively but think it was out of bounds too.

After two games:

Noel Thomas tied for third in receptions per game after two games (w/ CT product Erv Phillips from West Haven):

Bryant Shirreffs is 36th in passing efficiency after two games.

Puyol tied for 1st (w/ 38 others) for FG %

Wain is 45th in country w/ Avg/Yd per Punt.

UConn is tied for 1st for 4th down conversion %

UConn tied for 30th for third down conversion%

28th in Time of Possession

Sniff more later but only two games: FBS Football Statistics - NCAA.com

I agree. The team has no chance in better than average field position when they can't do anything return wise on special teams. On the other side, they've given up returns on special teams. Such a pathetic performance there.

Diaco said why he ran in the Bizzaro post game speech. He was afraid to throw the ball because it might get tipped or picked off. He wanted to win the game with a run and not lose it on a bad pass. His entire philosophy in any goal line situation is to run. It is part of the entire ultra conservative game plan that includes not returning punts. Until he is down and he gets loose because he runs out of time to score points. If the game is down to one score, he will always go the most conservative route possible.
