UConn Metrics (1/5)

Trap game. we better have energy for this one. crowd at hartford sucked sunday. pc will have obnoxious crowd even with kids on break. their superbowl, and chance at q1 win for march.

UConn's kenpom was #5 after Saturday's games. They went from 6 to 5 and flipped with Gonzaga after their struggles with Seattle. Then the Marquette game moved the Huskies down to 7 because the offensive efficiency number took a hit from yesterday's game.
I saw this today. O efficiency at 27 isn't going to cut it. Well, not likely anyway.

The pc crowd is obnoxious every day of their lives, whether they’re attending a basketball game or not. It’s simple biology.

We should do like college baseball and cancel the next game with Xavier since it will probably lower our metrics! Maybe DePaul and Xavier, too. 😉

Just to Ave you all time, I realize baseball teams don’t cancel league games. They most assuredly do non-conference games against bad teams though.

All this metric crap totally devalues the regular season more and more. And devalues wins even more.

We’re not hitting a high enough percentage of 3s. When more of them start going in (if they do), we’ll be fine. Largely, that’s Solo and (after Sunday) Mullins.
Well it’s January so that means it’s time for AK’s three-point shot to go into hibernation. Hopefully yesterday wasn’t the beginning of history repeating itself.

The spread between 15-30 for O Efficiency is super-tight. One very good/very bad shooting game will cause a lot of movement in either direction. The differences are really subtle.

There's 2.4 pts per 100 possessions (adjusted) difference between us and 15th. Literally 2-3 average/good shooting games with limited turnovers will likely move us up 10-15 spots. The team seems to be capable of it.

I believe only one team in the last 25 years has had a O or D efficiency rating on Kenpom above 25 and won a title. UConn 2014 if I remember right. I'd feel better if they could get that number down into the mid teens at least.

PBA was dead yesterday. Because the UConn-Marquette game was at Gampel.😀

I'm not concerned about the offense. Seeing out defense finally back where it needs to be after last year is refreshing. Much easier to get the shooting % up a few notches than to learn to defend as a unit.
I think we need to settle down on taking too many long distance 3’s and work on Malachi not eating 20 seconds of clock for a terrible shot. And improve FT shooting.

Those are my main worries and haven’t been solved yet. Other than that we run good stuff.

define "few." i'll be sweating on selection sunday if we lose more than 2-3 more games, especially if any are to the bottom 5 teams in the BE. need to win the BET as well.
Do you really care if we are a 1 or 2 seed? If we win the regular season at 18-2 or something similar, I’d sit the starters for the New Big East Tournament. But I don’t think risking injuries to win a meaningless event is worthwhile. I’d rather extend the regular season by 2 games.

you're high if you think Hurley is not trying to win the BE. and yes, we absolutely want to be the 1 seed in the East

These aren’t metrics the NCAA considers, but this seems like the place to post them.

Bart Torvik: 2 (clearly the best metric)
Evan Miyakawa: 5
Erik Haslam: 8

To a greater degree than our two title teams, and maybe even last year's team, the offense seems to rely heavily on creating easy shots off of defense and/or in transition. My concern with offense is that a team being highly efficient against our D, not missing many shots or turning it over has a magnified impact on our offense as well. The half court offense, so far, isn't up to expectations.

Maybe I'm too much of a homer. We're shooting almost 50% from the field, 79PPG despite our slow pace of play. 3pt% is decent despite the slow start for Mullins and Solo (and will keep improving). Our paint % is phenomenal. TOs are okay.

Really the only issue here is that we foul too much, and don't get to the line enough. That's something we can improve as the season goes on compared to something like press break, ball handling, or post game.

A percentage or two better from 3 and fixing our fouls by 20% on either end would give us a top-10 offense. Totally doable.

We just get into serious slogs on offense. There is a lack of off script offense and ability that leads to a lot of bad shots at end of clock. It’s especially apparent with Malachi running the show.
