The other side of the coin in that argument is that the 1 loss is because we only got to 6 final fours, meaning there were lots of other tournaments in which the season ended with a loss BEFORE the final four. Duke also has 5 national championships AND they have 12 losses in final fours. BUT that’s because they got to 17 final fours. So, which would you prefer - that your 5-time national championship program got to 17 final fours or to 6? Adolph Rupp took Kentucky to 5 NCAA championship games and won 4 of them. In addition, he took them to 2 NIT championship games back when that was just as good a tournament and won one of those as well. That’s a pretty impressive record. Bob Knight is probably the most similar to Calhoun. He only got Indiana to 5 final fours, but he won the national championship in 3 of them. Similarly Roy Williams took North Carolina to 5 final fours and won 3 of them. San Francisco is another program with a similar record. They won 3 national championships in the post-war era and only lost once in a final four. The most frustrating program to follow in the past 25 years if you don’t like getting teased has to be Michigan State. To Izzy’s credit he has gotten them to 8 final fours, which is more than anyone else in that span, BUT they have won the championship only once.
